In what may portend a totally new strategy yet to be really unveiled, Defense Secretary Gates has replaced McKiernan who is only 11 months into what is usual two year tour of duty. With Gates citing a new stress on unconventional thinking while some what saying McKiernan was an excellent General for a conventional war.

Replacing him will be McChyraystal who headed special operations in Iraq.
Given that scanty information, its anyone's guess on what the new strategy may be. I certainly hope the new strategy will be to build up Afghan institutions and fight the rampant Afghan corruption, and hopefully drive a wedge between Al-Quida and the Taliban. But it could also signal more use of air power and drones. And as I read his bio in Wiki, looks like he is not going to be what I think the times need.
