That's why I always sit behind the bushes with an assault rifle waiting to leap out and mow down anyone who walks within 25 feet of my car.

Wow you must live a very sad boring life then.

Seriously.
Increase the distance to 50 feet. Much more fun/satisfying.

I've done that, and with a backpack it's not horribly hard if you are smart about it.
or better yet, drop 3 kids off at school on a bike.
that's what school busses are supplied for.
or go on a date. while its raining. or snowing. bikes arent the shining answer for everything, despite what the spandex riders want everyone to think.
No, that is what public transit is for. Most people in manhattan don't have a car, yet they seem to be able to go on dates just fine.

No, I don't believe bikes are the end all and be-all, I want a car very badly again as I love driving, but a lot of people seem to think that the entire world works like their own little corner, when in fact there are so many different lives and ways of doing things that any argument for or against something is not universal.

Yeah my last car got syphoned a few times. My current one needs to be popped from the inside.

those inside lever ones can be easily popped with a decent knife. gas siphoning isnt anything new, but you probably will see more of it with the price of gas rising. my old car got hit a few times a couple years ago, but i havent had any issues so far with my truck. i thought about getting a locking cap too, but have yet to do that.

That or you can just crawl under the car, cut the line and suck it out from there.

Yep even more of the reason why I don't drive a car. Can't have this happen to a bike.

as for cutting the gas line, mine has metal gas lines front to back, youd have to drop the tank to get to a rubber hose. even if you cut the metal one, the diameter pretty much guarantees youll still be lying under my truck when i come out to shoot ya. or toss a match at ya, the accidental explosion would be fun to watch, and my insurance would pay the bill for a new truck. oh, so would your estate. =P

I have done every single of those things on a bike. You either need a bike for each person or one of those two, three, or four seated bikes. Where everyone pedals.

Gas doesnt seem expensive to me and my drive to work is about an hour and a half for both ways 5 days a week. I fill up premium when my tank goes below a quarter and I never look at prices.

Ive notice most gas stations in my area are pay first or use debit/credit. Credit ones requiring you enter you billing zip code. bad area require you to go in and show your ID even if you are using a credit card.

Would be cool to have a "dummy" fuel tank with salty watered down old gas in it. or pee.

I should just put a sticker on my wife's car that says "This car never carries more than 5 gallons of gas at any time".

Why would that matter? People would still steal. You can't stop a dedicated theft no matter what you do.

You don't have to stop them. You just have to not be the low hanging fruit. Who is gonna muscle a locking gas cap off of a dodge neon with an indeterminate amount of fuel in the tank when there's a chevy tahoe right next to it?

You must have expendible income coming out your ears then. Or oblivious. It cost me over $50 to top off a 13 gallon tank the other day.

3 years ago that would have cost me under $30. I don't know what you drive but given your commute I'd have to assume you are filling up once a week at a minimum. Even with my moderately economic car (25MPG combined milage) that would cost me almost $100 more a month. Just to drive to work and back.

If you have something even less efficient that could be closer to $150-$200 more a month. That's an extra car payment.

i  u 😀

I thought fuel lines had to be stainless steel for federal regulations' sake.

Anyone who thinks the car companies are using stainless for fuel and even brake lines better crawl under their vehicles and check them out, especially if they have some age to them. Not only are most NOT stainless but they are not even painted...

Worked on cars and trucks for years and replaced more then my share of rusted fuel/brake lines...

Yes, you can. You just have to be more dedicated then they are, though after a certain point those lengths become absurd.

There is always someone else out there that will be even more dedicated than you are though.

Couldn't that be said about the thief, too? There is always someone else out there that will be even more dedicated than he is.

You're assuming that you'd be able to hear them cut the metal line. Any method loud enough for you to hear in your home is going to be too dangerous to use on a metal gas line. Applying some sort of highly acidic compound would do it in a jiffy, and you'd be none the wiser!

There are a lot of reasons to ride a bike, but that is hardly one of them. It is more likely for your entire bike to be stolen than gas being siphoned out of your car.

How ironic that you'd make both of those statements. You do realize that not all students have the availability of bus transportation to and from school, right? And, for some students, that can mean a walk of several miles if not for their parents or friends giving them a ride.

Most gas theft these days comes from putting a bucket under the tank and putting a hole in the tank. It's faster, and easier. But leaves the owner with a huge bill to replace the tank. But hey, what does the thief care?

what? what do they use to punch a hole in the tank that definitely wont cause a spark?

The future, perhaps?? 😉

Actually, any sort of spiked tool (an awl, maybe? or an ice pick??) placed against the tank, and hit with a hammer, would be sharp enough to punch through without sparking, imho. Even a brave boy with a small cordless drill and a sharp drill bit. Though personally, I'd be a bit ward of the sparking that goes on inside one of those, where the motor brushes make contact with the rotor!!

Agreed, you can easily get by without a car in Manhattan.

A friend of mine told me about someone that received a 1000gal delivery of diesel fuel, and 800 gallons was stolen overnight... 800 * $4.50.. :Q
