that we won't see any relief all summer? Did I hear that right?

You have got to be kidding me!

Sadly, you wouldn't stop using so much gas until it hits you harder, such as $4/gal.

Gas does a lot of work for you for very little money.

I don't expect any 'relief' whatsoever: Once something has been taken, gas prices in this case, it is seldom given back.

I don't think gas prices are all that bad. $1.72 here on average. I paid $1.589 last night.
No big deal.

Seriously, until they hit $3.00 per gallon I think everyone needs to quit crying. Gas has been uber-cheap for years and now it's gone up to relatively cheap. Get over it.

I think it will go back down after the war. Remember about 2 years ago when it almost hit $2 because of OPEC wanting to lower its output?

Well, after they gave in, gas prices plummeted; I remember paying 87 cents for a gallon of unleaded December 2001.

While you are right, some of us have a certain amount bugeted for gas during the week. The $5-8 a week more it is costing me does have an impact. If it would have been gradual instead of over like 5 days, it would have been easier to adjust. but a $.60 rise in a very short amount of time can have an impact for those of us that can barely afford it the way it was.

i remember both of those incidents. Either way, it doesnt effect my bank account enough to warrant a second glance. I pay more in rent in two months than i pay in gas per year.

I'm curious what vehicle(s) you own. I think this will also illustrate the difference in vehicle availability between the United States and the UK.

4 pounds a gallon? Ouch...that's like $6.00 US per gallon according to current exchange rates. :Q

You're not living that hand-to-mouth are you? I mean, two beers out with the guys per week is $5-8 depending on where you get them.

I have a 92 Ford Escort, 1.4l. By no means a fuel drinker, I get about 80-100 miles from £10 of fuel (about 30+ miles/gallon).

The majority of people here have 4 door saloons, probably about a 2l engine at most on average.

0.79 * 3.785 = 2.99 < 4

Right now we're paying the equivalent of $2.32 US / gal

UK gallon != US gallon

0.79 * 4.54 = 3.58

Nearly £4 per gallon here.....I got it a little off, heard my mother mention £4 per gallon.

Still, £3 ($4.71) per US gallon, is a lot more than you are paying, so my original offer of quit whining still stands :p

here are some tips:

plan out your trip, run all your errands at once.
take the bus to work if possible, or park and ride
drive like a cheapass, meaning never go over 3k rpm, always let it cruise when u see a red light. open your windows and turn off ac at low speeds.

silverpig is from Vancouver, B.C. I'm pretty sure he was just quoting prices from his neck of the woods.

Yea, and it will be years before Iraqi oil comes back onto the world market. Probably a decade before they are back up to full production, pre 1991 levels.

Okay, cool.
First off, I don't mean to flame or anything, but, for instance, there was never a 1.4l Escort available in this country, and most family-type vehicles employee six-cylinder engines in the neighborhood of 3 liters.
Now, this is in part, of course, due to marketability in the US: people want more power, more room, etc., etc., and thereby we have a general vehicle fleet that uses more gas and takes up more space than in the UK and the rest of europe. This obviously places us at a disadvantage ion the fule economy department, and at no one's fault but the general whim of the masses.
Just thought this would be an approprite time to outline som eof the differences :)
