Shale was turned in in a relative heart beat and can likely do so again. Also, US and EU demand is trending down and could be making seriously deeper cuts in demand due to political winds shifting towards environment. Asia is spiking heavily though. Peek oil is coming sooner rather than later, it's just happening on demand, not supply.

One of the other theories is that the Saudis see peak demand in the next 2-ish decades. This supply glut would supposedly delay alternative energy sources and be like a hit to a recovering addict to cause a relapse. Also, one last chance to sell it while it's hot.

So, I don't get it. I'm loving the direction gas prices are going right now - down, the lower the better.

In the past, people or news listing the bad affects of high gas prices. Now, I'm reading about the bad affects that is coming with the low gas prices...

Don't lose any sleep on the temporary low prices. Already going back up in many areas. Here in south Florida back up to $2.39 after very briefly dropping below $2.

^^ Negative Nancy here always posting about high gas prices...

I don't understand why Premium is 50 cents more than regular when it used to be just 20 cents more. Fucking annoying. Then 100% 93 is even higher... ugh.

Companies are too greedy. "oh noes prices are down we need to lay off people!". They managed fine before when prices were that low before, why the sudden panic now? They're still making trillions of dollars either way.

Sucks for places like Alberta that don't have many other industries, the people are suffering from it, but in general for the rest of us it's a good thing that the prices are lower.

I'm enjoying the near dollar per litre pricing though. I filled up the other day at like $1.10/litre ($4.18/gal). It did go lower than that for about a day some time last year though but it's very rare it gets that close to the $1 mark. I remember before 9/11 when it was actually under a dollar. It went up to over a dollar pretty much the same day. Most gas station signs were not equipped for that extra digit, it was kinda humorous. Comes to show though, gas prices are just a big game. They just randomly set them on world/political events.

That's...really expensive. It's $0.80/liter in Calgary.

That kinda pisses me off. There used to be a 20 cent spread from 87 to 93, now it's 60 - and prices are the same as they were when the difference was 10 cents between grades (except premium is far more). Costco has been the best bet so far, with 'only' a ~40 cent difference.

Yep, I have seen no reason for it to jump up either. Really, really annoying. I understand that the vast majority of cars don't need anything more than 87, I have two that do. One needs 100% pure gas, or else runs terrible.

Some stations near me are 70 cents higher for Premium, it's getting pretty ridiculous. The last station that consistently had a 20 cent difference for Premium was Hess but that was over 6 or 7 years ago. I believe Hess isn't around anymore since they were bought out.

When prices were rising, did they hire more people?
It should go both ways.

It's hurting the expansion of US domestic oil production, because it's a hell of a lot cheaper to drill for oil in an Saudi desert than it is to frack the shale for a new well in North Dakota.

There is negative reporting now on low gas prices because oil shale production got in too deep and tons of people lost their jobs. Oil has be above a certain price for shale production to be profitable.

Exactly, BOO FUCKING HOO for the oil companies that invested in fracking. Go cry to OPEC because they're the ones fucking you in the ass. I couldn't possibly care less about your profits.

Calgary is also in Alberta, which is basically the Texas of Canada in terms of oil production. :p We have not seen 80 cents here in over a decade.

Though we do get screwed over here, the more south you go the cheaper it is. But up north they get screwed over even more so can't complain too much I guess. You should see the food prices there, completely insane. Like 70 bucks for a box of chicken breasts. Probably even worse this year as it's been too hot to get the winter roads open.

If you take out a huge loan when energy is expensive and have to pay it back when energy is cheap you're gonna have a bad time as commodity costs fall.

Its not permanent. We all know that. People buying SUVs on 6-7 year loans are dumb.

They are predicting it will go as low as $1.50 by summer. E-85 is already down to $1.49 here.

it was almost down to 1.50 here a few weeks ago, now its in the mid 1.60's. also gas and E-85 are pretty much the same price. there used to be about a buck difference between the two if that was the case now, E-85 would be 60 cents a gallon.

!?

NJ really needs to catch up on the E85 thing....shit's $2.60+/gal here.

You know it has less energy density right.

30mpg gasoline is like 23mpg ethanol.

So the savings is not as significant as people think.

lower gas prices -> destabilization in the middle east
destabilization in the middle east -> increase tensions
increase tensions -> conflicts & wars
conflicts and wars -> US involvment
US involvment -> increase in govt foreign spending
increase in govt foreign spending -> higher taxes
higher taxes -> less disposable income
less disposible income -> less spending on goods and services
less spending on goods and services -> poor economy
poor economy -> negatively affect the working class

...So basically the OP just want to watch the world burn.:colbert:

It's ~50 cents a gallon more than 93 octane here ($2.12 @ Costco), and a 20% power bump for me. Fuel economy is not the concern...it's just annoying to have it that much more expensive.

You want them lower? I don't care if they go to $6/gallon. I only drive ~1500 miles a year and if gas prices go really high that means there will be less drivers on the road to bug me when I'm on my skates and bicycle. Plus less carbon emissions to screw up the planet. Take that!

Cheaper gas prices = more driving = more CO2 and pollution = more extreme weather = more deaths and respiratory health effects/cancers

Yay, cheap gas!!!

Yet when gas prices were increasing the the 10 years leading up to 2008 when it began falling there was nothing different in the climate graphs?
