yes, i'm exaggerating, but not by much.

do they fly A320s that far or did Malaysian outfit them with some bigger planes?

i have to say i liked the fact that when i had to buy a ticket from chang mai thailand to KL at the airport the day before the flight i didn't get reamed.

of course, we didn't get credit for the flight we missed, which SWA would do with a regular price fair.

do it with contracts rather than options?

they could hedge the hedge with options

if people are still filling the planes why should they lower the price?

I'm not sure what they fly.. but I can bring my own lunch if it means saving a couple hundred dollars on airfare. I am typically able to bring all my stuff as carry-on if I have to so I'm a big fan of all the surcharges if it means lowering my fare. It is also nice to have the option of a bare bones carrier instead of being limited to the full-service, expensive options that are all you have if you want to get across the oceans. Hopefully Ryan Air changes that soon. I mean you're welcome to fly Thai Airways if you want better service, just have to pay more.

I read an article somewhere this morning that they were discounting holiday flights at the last minute because no one is flying this year. It said business economy class is good, but they don't really fill the bum seats.

as for Shell, why is it so expensive on the West Coast, or at least in CA? back home (East Coast) it used to be the cheapest around.

The cheapest we saw yesterday was $1.99, and the Shell was at ~$2.34. It always maintains some premium price over the other stations in the area.

I just booked my flight from Portland to Atlanta and I got the last seat on the flight.

1.65 here for unleaded!

Which supplier, pray tell, would be willing to lock in a long term contract at 1.65?

They are keeping their lame baggage fees because they want to move to a la carte pricing where you pay for the services you use. Of course that means paying extra for services, instead of discounts for those who don't use them.

Which is better PR?
$15 discount for those not checking a bag.
or
$15 fee for the first bag you check.

Shakes head.

Many airlines saw what was coming years ago and hedged as gas prices were going up. So, when gas was $4, they were paying much less. Just be glad prices did not go up as much as they could have 6-12 months ago.

For similar reasons, there is no reason to believe that airlines will reduce prices.

Uhh, no. Southwest hedged. Others didn't. The dumb airlines that didn't hedge before decided they wanted to be hedgefunds and start a hedging program at the height of the oil bubble. United locked it in when oil was around $140 a barrel. I remember reading about the stupidity that is United and posting about it back then. I'm sure other dumb and dumber airlines probably did the same and are not admitting it yet.

I'm home for Thanksgiving and I'll be driving for the first time in months... luckily I still have half a tank. Here it's $2.09, but across the bridge in NJ it's $1.68.

I heard the reason Southwest was still profitable lately was because they hedged the prices from 5 years ago.
Now that prices are low, Southwest may be in a world of hurt in the next few years.

That makes no sense. Gas prices in 2003 (5 years ago) were around $1.72 a gallon.

http://money.cnn.com/2003/03/1...y/gas_prices/index.htm

How would they be in a world of hurt if they are using $1.72 a gallon vs the $1.60 - $1.70 gallon of gas now? lol

The price of a oil barrel was between $25 and $30 in 2003. Oil Barrels are now around $50.

Help me understand this if I'm wrong.

OP - tickets from Newark to Maui are $600 right now. I haven't seen them that low in years.
