Gas Guzzler Tax

So my dad is a GM at a Pontiac/Buick/GMC dealership and he called me to tell me that he has a good deal on a GTO. The deal might be too good to pass on, thus burying my car stereo plans.

But its funny, when you go to the GTO website at the very bottom there is a $1000 gas guzzler tax. Whats the deal with this? Do SUV's get this tax? I would hope that a Hummer, or any 8 cyl truck gets these taxes.

Whats next, tax on broadband for "bandwith guzzlers"?

2004 or 2005?

Its an awesome car btw... you'll definatly enjoy it.

Whats the "deal" you're getting on it?

the deal should be around $325/month on smartbuy.......nothings definite, and i dont know what options it has nor how much money upfront.

i find out more tomorrow hopefully.

Its a 2004

Its hard giving up my beemer though

broadband doesn't consume more resources than dialup. In a way it might save resources, since we don't have to leave our computers on for as long while downloading...right?

Yes, I would hope that SUVs get that tax, but I don't know.

If you can afford it, go for it 🙂

Very nice cars. I'd trade up almost any BMW (Aside from an M3/M5/Maybe a 330CI) for one.

Even an X5?

There are no options on the GTO other than an Automatic 4sp trans

The Automatic causes the car to have a Gas Guzzler Tax

The 6sp Manual trans does not thave the tax

Wait till this time in 2005, same deals will apply and the '05 GTO gets a 6.0L LS2 Corvette engine good for 50 more ponies and 35lb/ft TQ. No cost ram air hood and 18" wheels.

In all honesty, i dont need the extra 50.

And if the time comes that i do need it, i'm getting a corvette. I just like the way they look.

why tax for using more resources ? It's not like the money will allow them to create more oil.

If they don't want to allow it, don't allow it. Otherwise, tough s#it.

Yep. The guzzler tax is rediculous. We should charge an oxygen tax and charge football players more since they use more oxygen.

I have no idea what it is, but I do know that I paid it for my GTO...and depending on your overall numbers (how much down, etc.), it might help your dad to know that I got my GTO for $229/mo including taxes after $999 down including the first month's payment. That was a lease however, not a purchase.

It's a...nice...ride 😉

Because driving a gas guzzler is more of a vice like cigarettes and should be penalized.

Maibatsu Monstrosity anyone?..

Just read my 2nd line again. BTW, SUVs have a practical use. Don't even get me started on being a waste. You want to talk waste... look at sports cars. You can look at cigarettes too.

Don't start with the cigarettes. It reminds me of the South Park episode where they go to the museum of tolerance and then yell at the smoker.

And lots of SUVs don't have a practical use.

What's your point?

wtf? I'm in NY, leases are allowed..
Maybe the lease isn't allowed in some specific circumstance, like that particular model in that particular area of NY. But, as far as NY goes, I know of no "lease" laws that would prevent a lease of that vehicle.

BTW, Yes, there's a tax on H2 and all those other monstrosities.
But, what you guys might not realize is that if the cost of the vehicle is >50K, and they can claim they use it for some legitimate business use, they get to write off the cost on their income taxes - more than offsetting the gas guzzler tax.

The gas guzzler tax is like taxing you a larger percentage of your income because you make more. It's dumb. Why don't we have a tax on TVs larger than 32" because they use more energy. Or let's have a greater tax on super size food.

Bottom of the Page

Thats why they call it smartbuy. its a loan with a balloon payment at the end to make the payments cheaper.

WTF ??? I'm not understanding, you befuddle me. Extra space and/or 4WD is how. Extra ground clearance is how. Explain how not. I think my point was quite clear.
