Link - I wish there were video of this just because I enjoy watching the British yell and argue. Best I could find in the way of a pic was here. Edit: Found a video but no yelling or arguing.

A petrol station which gave away free fuel has been temporarily shut down after motorists flocking to its pumps caused traffic chaos.

Electronic Arts were giving away £20,000 worth of fuel at the station on Stapleton Hall Road, near Finsbury Park, north London, as part of a promotion for a new video game.

But the stunt angered residents and local politicians for causing gridlock during the morning rush hour.

Liberal Democrat MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, Lynne Featherstone, said: "Whilst a lucky few might have got some free petrol, hundreds of local residents have faced misery on their daily journeys this morning.

"They deserve an apology for being the victims of such an ill-thought out media stunt."

Norman Tidiman, from Hackney, who works for a charity shop in the area, said: "I saw a girl who stopped because she wasn't going to make the lights, and the man in the car behind her got out his car and started to bully her.

"I shouted at him to stop. He was being outrageous.

"It's quite a dangerous junction as it is, I'm surprised there hasn't been an accident."

The entire forecourt had been transformed into a military style bunker to promote new video game Mercenaries 2: World in Flames.

Donna Lashley, 41, from Crouch End had been waiting for 40 minutes to fill up her car.

She said: "I think it's a brilliant promotion. I don't see it becoming a full-time thing, but I think it's a great idea - I'll be telling my sons about the game."

It started around 6.30am, before being shut down just after 11am, with only £11,000 of the £20,000 given away.

Donald Parish, from EA, said: "Petrol is expensive at the moment and people are having a hard time so we just wanted to do something for them.

"We had been talking closely with the police and they felt it was turning into a problem so they shut it down.

"We're disappointed that we've not been able to give everything away but I think we've had a lot of happy customers."

edit: Just in case somebody doesn't get the "Oh no you din't!"

I knew this would happen.

People go crazy over free stuff.
People go crazy over gas prices.

Offering free gas increases the people fervor exponentially.

Seriously, what is up with people and free stuff? For example, when McDonalds had that free breakfast chicken sandwich Sunday, tons of people showed up that would normally not have eaten at McDonalds. The line wrapped all the way around the restaurant and back, all for a lousy, small chicken sandwich, that normally only costs one dollar.

Yep...It's amazing how jacked up people become over the most insignificant things. Makes you wonder about the human race.

Heh, the best "Free Stuff Leads to Chaos Story" was Six Flags Over Georgia letting people in free one day. Completely fubar'd the highways, had people sitting out in their cars for hours from early in the morning, and then they had to turn people away because too many people came into the park.

Chick-Fil-A had a free Chicken Strips if you wear something with your football team's logo on it on Labor Day. We took the kids over there for that and it was actually very sedate. No large crowd.

Don't get me started about free food events at universities...

I tend to avoid going to about half of those since it's usually unhealthy stuff like pizza and the lines are absurdly long...

Kia did this in my neighborhood a few weeks ago. They did a rather remarkable job organizing the event. Told local govt, had police out, made a wait line that wrapped around the surrounding neighborhoods to relieve congestion. they had officers at each block. i'm sure the govt got some monetary compensation...i dont know, it's a good stunt, but the people who went out to get free gas were questionable though. i mean, it was wed morning, shouldn't they be at work instead of waiting in line for 3-4 hours for a free tank of gas?
