Gas fireplace insert below 52" Samsung lcd

My Samsung 52" lcd is 18 inches above the top of my zero clearance fireplace. It is 7 inches above the mantle. The mantle sets out 6 inches beyond the face of the fireplace. I never use the fireplace. I am now looking at putting in a flush faced natural gas insert. It will have a blower and burn natural gas. I think I will be ok, but would like to know if anyone else has their flat panel above their fire place. Any heat issues with the tv? Also please tell me of your experience with your gas insert and the cost of the unit and installation. Thanks.
 
I wouldn't put one that close to a heat source. 18 inches is pretty close and heat will rise off the burners up the wall.
 
I've had my 50" Samsung Plasma above my Fireplace for couple years now. Absolutley no problems whatsover. I heard so much BS when I was debating whether or not to instlall it like I did. After I finally hung the TV I relized how stupid most the arguments were against it. I'll never have a TV any other place now. Looks great, centers the room perect and everyone who comes into our front room is jealous.

As to the cost I have no idea.
 
I was thinking about hanging a 52" LCD over my mantle as well, but I don't think that I'd have room for the center channel speaker and left/right bookshelf speakers. Oh well.

A fireplace produces lot of heat - enough to burn stuff. Heat rises. If you put something right above a good portion of the fireplace's heat will go right against the TV. You may as well put it in the oven. The only way I can see this being 100% safe is if the manel has a Huge ledge, so it might deflect the heat away from the TV. I still would not take chances though. When you pay 6k+ for a TV you want it to last you long.

the fireplace produces a lot of heat that rises out a chimney.

the heat going into the room is such that a human can bask in it. it's not gonna hurt electronics.
 
Build a heat shield for the TV. My dad built one for his speakers for the same reason (one was about a foot from his gas furnace). He used black steel, cut to the dimensions of his speaker, plus a little more to wrap just barely around the front. Absorbs all the heat that would otherwise be building up in his speaker. Not the most elegant solution, but because it's the same color as his speakers you can barely see it. Probably a little harder to do for a wall mounted TV though. Worth considering.
 
There's not much heat coming off the top of a proper fireplace above the mantle. You can try checking temperature at that level first before mounting the TV there to be sure.

That is what I would do before mounting something there.
Use the biggest fire you would normally have and place a thermometer where teh tv will be.
 
Well the tv has been mounted there for 2 years. The gas insert company is coming out Wednesday to measure for the insert. I have read conflicting reports on this. A lot of folks say do not do it, but I can not find anyone who has actually fried one. I think I am going to do it.

That's not a bad idea. Some kind of acrylic casing with some fans pulling air from somewhere that has no heat (or it would overheat if it stays closed in). Would help protect the screen from wii accidents too.
