Gas bill question. Big fail on my part.

Ok I woke up late and head down to the kitchen to find that I left one of the gas ranges turned on at the lowest setting. I guess I thought I turned it off but turned it the wrong way.

I used it last night for dinner, so it must have been on for about 18 hours.

How much do you think it's going to cost me extra in gas utilities this month?
 
Open all windows, get everyone out. You have a pretty serious explosion hazard going on right now. Don't touch anything that could make sparks.

The cost would be the last thing on my mind at this point.

I assumed the burner was still lit. That is the queston.
 
On low, that's about 40-50 cubic feet over 18 hrs (assuming typical burner of 6-10K BTU/hr), or half a CCF. Depending on the rate in your area, it likely cost you around $1.

If he is alive and does not smell the gas(odor that is with gas), he is totally fine. There is no fire hazard. :whiste:

Hmm yeah good point, if it stayed lit then it's only a bit of CO and CO2 to worry about, but I'm guessing gas stoves are designed so it's mostly or all CO2, which is not as dangerous as CO.
 
My old roommate did that a couple times. He would leave the stove gas burner/oven on and go out. Luckily, I came back from work and would turn off that crap. /CSB

IF you left the fire on all night its safe and the cost is very cheap. less then $10 that's for sure.

IF you found it on but no fire going then get out and call the company to come check it out.
 
sorry to alarm you guys. The range was still lit, but the flames were so low that I must have missed it. Everyone's OK.

Glad everyone is safe. It is unfortunate that many victims die due to house fires, whether they were sleeping at such time, or trapped in a no-exit situation. :|
 
Yes, probably a dollar or two. My gas bills in the summer are usually <$25, and most of that's the water heater.
