Gary Sheffield....class act

Yep.
He's got the nuts to tell it like how it is.
Why should he put himself in risk of injury and what not. He probably doesn't have much time left in his career anyways.

At his age, he'd probably get hurt pretty easily anyway. He could have taken the PC way out and just said he doesn't want to. Rather than slam the whole idea.

Yeah, did you see how much love Abreu got from his Venezuelan players last night?

I can think of a perfect word to describe this fellow that starts with an "n"

It has nothing to do with race and EVERYTHING to do with attitude

sure sure it has nothing to do with his race (even though he is black). thats why you hint to calling hima ni**er great.

what a class act you are.

this is the reason basketball and baseball suck the players are not playing for a love of the game they are playing for money. if you look at european footbal teams(soccer) they are honored to play for there national teams in the world cup. they can truley be called the world champions when they win the world cup unlike the "world champions" who win the world series which consists of american teams.

I've known white ones as well, but wtf even bring the n-word up? Why not punk or something else more appropiate?

So much for love of the game...

With the salaries you can make as a professional baseball player, I'm sure most don't care about the love of the game as much as they do the love of money.

pretty much my point. you can't say its not racism when you call the guay the N word now can you?

It is a stupid game. I wouldn't do it if I was a MLB player. He's exactly right....it is made up. He said it's not like it's the Olympics...and said the Olympics are different.

I don't have a problem with it. At least he's not a candy-ass like all the other players who don't like it and are afraid to say anything

fvck you all, it's about #1 ... him. no sarcasm needed / intended. if you do something to put a show on for the folks you don't owe them anything ... lousy peons yelling "OMG HE SUCKS AND IS GREEDY!!!!" don't like it, boycott, a$$holes.

He gets paid $20+ million a year to play in a sport where most of the population would do for free.

That's how most American baseball players are. And most professional athletes in general. They play only for themselves and the ridiculous amounts of cash they make every year and not for their teams or their countries because they don't care.

I disagree with his decission, but isn't that his right to play in the world classic? Unfrotunately, I think as the event nears a lot of players will end up bailing out. Sheff is just stupid for saying it out loud like that.

Ya know, I can understand his logic and everything. Its just messed up though. Ive been an athlete all my life, and Ive been injured before. My dream was always to play professional soccer, and I can tell you if I was given the opportunity to represent ANYONE (be it country, city, school, work, whoever) in any sport... I'd do it. I would think that most athletes, especially professionals (people with determination, dedication as well as natural ability) would love the game enough to play for free. I mean sure, making money is great... and its important. But someone like Sheffield has enough money already. Why wouldn't you want to play the game that you love and have the honor of representing your country?

You would play every day from February to October for free, and not work?

"The International Olympic Committee voted last week to kick baseball out of the Olympics following the 2008 Beijing Games."

wtf?

So how does having the balls to say what at least half of baseball players out there think in the MLB have to do with him being a class act?

There's no real sense of national pride in baseball because unlike in soccer or even basketball, you know the US and Cuban teams would dominate.
