it locks the function key if you didn't know. that means on a laptop 1/2 of your keys are locked to type numbers instead of letters. if you didn't know you hit shift+numlock combination, you will think your keyboard is broke/stuck or the FN key is jacked up somehow. you can't search for help, because you can't type - all of your letters are all messed up!

fixed now though 🙂

i have a feeling that i'm going to prank a few people at work tomorrow 🙂

i get that issue from users at least 2-3 times a day... you shoulda asked me about it 😉

user: "my keyboard is just typing numbers" ..
me: ok.. hit shift-numlock.
user: where is the unlock key?
me: NUM LOCK.. number lock.. should be at the top of your keyboard.. usually it's part of the key that says SCROLL
user: oh. found it.
user: hey it works!

I don't get it to that extent but it's fairly common. I was surprised how many posters above didn't know that

Doesn't do anything for me. With FN+Shift+numlock it only turns on numlock, can be turned off with FN+numlock.

On a laptop btw.

First thing I would have done was restart

believe it or not... restarting doesn't fix a num lock issue.

exactly, i probably restarted 2-3 times. went into the bios a couple times to see if i could disable some keys, etc etc. that is why i thought it was a hardware failure. then i decided to go to google and type "fn 2ey st4c2" figuring that someone else had to have had the same problem. i was hoping that i could find a software program that could force the FN key on and off. i was shocked to find that it was just a key combo!

it also surprised the hell out of me that the key combo stays on even after a restart.

This only gets worse when the user tries to log on in the morning and locks himself out from inputting the password incorrectly many times.

Dear Cattlegod,
I did a Google search on H6w t6 t4rn 6ff n4036c2 and came across this forum. I wanted to thank you for saving 4 hours of my time!

On my old work laptop, the numlock was automatically set when starting the laptop. This became an issue everytime I attempted to login.

Umm...you won't be pranking anyone since most people know how to use the FN lock.
