Garrison Keillor on the Republican Party

Who cares?

As in "Of course, we all knew that already?"

I would agree, although Keillor does have a more stylish way of saying it than most of the people on this board.

Well that surprises me!

Are you actually impressed with them yourself. Forget the Democrats for a second, are you really happy the way they are running this country?

If you're going to label someone as a "communist" it would be a good idea to be able to prove it with some competent documentation. If you can't do that, you're just a pissant name-calling little whiner with zero to say and even less integrity behind it.

The article is sporadic, unfocused, and lacks any true message save a more articulate rehashing of the typical potshots taken at Republicans by the left.

Similarly, the OP provides no dialogue for discussion...so you agree with the article...congratulations...which means this thread will deteriorate into the usual Republican bashers praising this article as the greatest editorial document since the last anti-Republican editorial.

Color me unimpressed.

I like the fact that you see more and more of these types of editorials and articles everyday.

which is a good thing. Hopefully people are starting to see the Emperor is naked.

Easy to kick the President when he is down in the polls...where was the brave voice of dissent against the Bush Administration when he formulated the policies that got the nation into such a mess.

Good question and one that has been oft asked at P&N.

I think you should maybe read the article again. The author does bring up some of the rather typical potshots taken at Republicans, but strip all that aside, and he makes a very good point about how the Republicans are (apparently) going to try and hold on to their control of the government.

They've been in control for a while now, and the best reason they can come up with to keep them around is that gay people want to get married, and Democrats are kind of gay. There is no substantive argument in their favor, it's all a bunch of name calling (you know, the thing you hate when the OTHER guys are doing it?) and focusing on stupid issues that really don't affect people, and focusing on the SAME stupid issues as last time around.

Anybody who doubts Republicans are having trouble coming up with reasons to keep them around need only look at their repeat performance of "the gay people are coming to get you!" from two years ago.

See this is where I disagree...the NeoCon leadership of the Republican party may be grasping at straws, but we are also witnessing an increasing number of Republicans, particularly in the legislature, distancing themselves from the Bush Administration.

Regardless of what causes each respective party chooses to champion at the national level, local elections still come down to which candidate most appeals to local constituents.

The "gay" issue may be a ploy to motivate the conservative base, but leave it to a San Francisco columnist to focus entirely on the gay issue in his tired and predictable attack on Republicans.

The administration has done a pretty good job of squashing dissent.

anyone remember Powell?

Us regular folks have been voicing our displeasure for years. I guess we are all easy to tune out...

yes as predictable as the GOP wedge issues during election season. next will be the terror alerts. You dont like what this guy has to say and that is fine. Just try to not dismiss the message, because it is deserved. Unless you can think of something positive this administration can lay claim to?

Maybe within the Republican ranks, but the Bush Administratoin holds no sway over Democrats or the media to prevent them from speaking out...yet both were afraid to challenge Bush when he was a popular wartime President, but have moved in for the kill now...kind of dishonest in my opinion.

Wedge issues motivate the core bases of both parties, the Republicans have just done a better job of it in recent years.

As far as the article goes, it is not that I don't like what the author is saying...it is that I don't think he is saying very much of all.

As for the Bush Administration, I dont think there is much of anything they can lay claim to as being positive.

...

Indeed, although Republicans did basically the same thing...they are only speaking out against Bush now that he's unpopular.

I think many of those voices of dissent are all retired Generals now. As for when Bush was a popular wartime President, well, I think it is safe to say we all wanted war with Osama, the Taliban, and Al Q. Once we invaded Iraq that all changed. I do remember the pundits on TV raising issues with regard to allowing the UN to continue to do its job.

So he isn't saying anything to you? I know the leftist rants are old and tired but there is a reason why that is so, because this kind of political BS has been going on for far too long. Granted it isn't just a GOP thing.

It all seems so cyclical to me. The left does it to the right, the right does it to the left.
