Garmin NAV: free traffic question

Got my dad a Nuvi 285wt that includes lifetime free traffic.

In the manual, it says it's supposed to have a subscription already as long as it gets a satellite signal. I don't see it getting traffic information at all, and yes it is plugged in via the cig lighter for the fm antenna.

When I go to the traffic settings on the unit, all I can do is add a subscription. I hit that and it tells my unit ID number and also the garmin.com/fmtraffic website... but all I see on the website is a $49 premium subscription option. If I hit NEXT on the unit, it asks me to input a code, presumably for the premium sub I'm supposed to purchase.

Any help on getting this free traffic working?

edit: 2nd review says you have to buy that Navteq receiver (which comes with a lifetime subscription...and popup ads lol).

oops looks like user error... the green traffic icon does appear now... never noticed it before... also never noticed any ads so I know I never got it to work before... not sure what I did differently this time.

I know.

The only reason I mention it is because you said that you JUST BOUGHT the Garmin...

oh sorry I checked that also and it's the 265wt with the lifetime FM (not MSN-enhanced 3 month trial).
