@#@!#!!!! I called the other OD in my town and the CSR told me they could special order me the GPS III + straight from the manufacturer for the clearance price. I drive up there and the manager says 'Yes they can special order it for me. For the regular price of $329.' Then he tried to sell me the floor display of the Etrek for 10% off 229.00. I said a bad word and left. :|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|

Is the etrex worth the 69.99 price. Does anyone have this model and what do they think of it. I was not able to get the III+ but was able to get the etrex. But I am not sure if I want this model. Can you download maps or hook up to computer for routing.
TIA
Melvin

This GPS is for land travel and waypoints, right?
There are never deals on marine GPS units?
Garmin makes good marine ones too.

These two models are fine for marine use.
A couple of my friends have them and use the them solely for boating.

I just picked up both the emap ($99.88) and the GPS III+ ($99.88)
I checked everywhere in Illinois and only found these.

I noticed that these are out of stock on the OD website and on the GPS III+ is on backorder.

BTW, has anyone noticed that the OD website is now showing the GPS III+ price as $289.99?

I'm glad I got mine before it was too late.

You know, the GPS III Plus and the GPS III Pilot look identical. There must be a way to update the III+ with the aviation info. Does anyone have a clue? I think I'll just trade mine plus some cash for the III+ Pilot.

I would goto www.garmin.com and pose that question to them, they MAY have some sorta upgrade policy.. but I think it would be HARDWARE not software based.

DealyDo, first of all thanks for the great deal!

I got one on Sunday evening in Los Angeles for $97.30 after $10 rebate and tax.
I don't understand how some could get it for $60 ??? Or was it only for online ordering?
Some mentioned a coupon snail mailed to them, were they "individual coupons" or such 5 digits as Staples'?

Anyhow, nice thing to play with, but I guess it will end up e_bay after a few days...

According to the Garmin site FAQs ...

Q. Can I upgrade my GPS III to a GPS III+?

A. Due to significant hardware differences and the associated costs to upgrade from a GPS III to a GPS III+, no upgrades are available.

AND

Q. Do you take trade-ins?

A. Unfortunately not. GARMIN is a new equipment manufacturer and we sell our equipment exclusively through our distribution network. As we do not sell equipment directly, we also have no market for used equipment taken in on trade.
And

Correction to the comment I made earlier....most mapping software works with GPSIII+, but uses it basically as an antenna, so you can track where you're going from an attached laptop. In order to download routes to the GPS unit itself ( to free it from the computer), you need the Mapsource. These are way expensive. Anyone got a good source for them, please let me know.

There at least 4 ODs in NYC.
Go toOD and then to "find a Store" (Top left)
Just use the state, NY in the search and it will give you about 15 B&M's
in NY State.
A few in NYC and a few more on L.I.

DealyDo

Looks like the GPS III+ is back up to regular price, but thanks for a really hot deal.
I really wanted one of them for a present, but if you snooze you lose!

By what I read on the Rand McNally street finder page, you can use their software with this device? Any input?

FAQs

Q: I am using a Garmin? GPS unit. How do I set this unit up to work with your StreetFinder software?

A:Cut for space reasons, see their site.

Q: I am using a Garmin? GPS unit. How do I set this unit up to work with your StreetFinder software?

A: The Garmin GPS unit requires an interface cable that can be attached to your laptop computer (contact Garmin to obtain a cable for your specific unit). Once you have attached the interface cable to your laptop, make sure your Garmin unit?s "Interface" settings are correctly set (use the list below for your particular unit).

GPS III Plus - Set "Interface" settings to "NMEA"
GPS 12 - Set "Interface" settings to "NONE/NMEA"
StreetPilot ColorMap - Set "Interface" settings to "NMEA Out"

For any other questions regarding the use of these units, please consult your manual. Garmin also maintains users manuals for all of their products on their web site at http://www.garmin.com/support/userManual.html.

Once you have properly configured your Garmin GPS:

Open StreetFinder and select GPS/SETTINGS
Under ?GPS Type? select one of the Garmin settings (Older or Newer).
Select ?Monitor? mode then click OK.
Start GPS by pressing your F9 key or selecting GPS start from the StreetFinder Deluxe 2000 menu.

I guess their software(Rand) only accepts data out. I.E. output to a laptop, it does not feed data in the GPS for storage. Dang..

If anyone is willing to trade thier eMap Deluxe (with memcard/CDROM) or thier GPS III PLUS for a Philips Nino 510 color WinCE handheld (or else sell at a less-than-retail healthy profit); please PM or email me (jasongilroy@mediaone.net)

Thanks,

CJ ... I thought I read Raw Dog has one for you. I have one on hold but it is a long out of the way trip so I think I will cough it up tomorrow.

I called a few places today ... looking for the EMAP version. I got the III+ but I wanted one for driving. Still have a Etak though. No CNET rebate yet. :frown:

Found some cool freeware software to download my GPS track data into.
http://www.gpstm.com/
Nice zooming in feature, click on path and it reads out distance.

Haven't played with it enough to see what all it can do. From the website they show map data overlayed onto the track data but I haven't gotten that far yet.
