I think the ending was good. The movie gets very sad up to the end (like right before the last scene, it shows everyone upset that he is leaving - his dad, his friends, Sam). If the movie ended like that, the character of Andrew wouldn't have changed in any visible way. Plus, I don't want to get out of a movie and feel all depressed.
