I have a few tools and things I'd like to hang up on my garage wall, and I'm a bit undecided about which direction to go. A rake, shovel, broom, leafblower, edger, etc.

I have a Lowe's and Home Depot nearby, so I'm hoping to source what I get from them.

Part of me wants to just get a 2x8' and screw it in horizontally to the wall, then just screw in various hooks that I can get for cheap. This would look pretty tacky though and won't be as functional as a pre-fabbed system.

The kit I'm looking at is $99 on sale at Lowes, and seems to cover most of the bases.

But I also like this one, which seems to have less accessories and less track footage. It's also cheaper though. (but not on sale).

I need something asap as my garage is filled with crap and I need to get some stuff off the floor. So I'm hoping to buy something tonight.

Problem with those are that you have to hit a stud, if you have finished walls you can't move them easily without a mess, and they aren't nearly as dynamic for different tools.

I use gladiator stuff, mostly purchased on clearance or sale from Sears. Have an 8'x10' section of Gearwall, another 10' wide section of track I have 30" cabinets on, and 2x2' tracks I put brooms/shovels on, as well as a ball hanger.

Keeps my garage pretty clean.

I don't think those will grip well enough for heavy tools like shovels and metal rakes and such. I saw the shorter one in the store and was thinking about it for indoor brooms and the like. It looked like it would work pretty well for lightweight stuff. I'm glad you linked to that because I had forgotten I wanted to pick one up before we left for Florida. It will fit in a corner of the laundry closet very well and keep all that stuff up off the floor. :thumbsup:

I have a length of the FastRrak rail linked to by the OP with a number of various hooks out in the shed. As was said, the versatility of being able to put the hangers in any location without concern for where studs are is the appeal. But you can tie up some dough with that system. Fortunately for me, it was a "business expense".

This is what I used previously, and it's not flexible in its use and leaves much to be desired.

That said, for limited applications it would work and I actually have several that I plan on mounting. But I still need something smarter.

I ended up buying the Gladiator starter package (2nd link in OP).

I haven't installed it yet though. Need to this weekend.

I thought about doing that. But once you factor in the time/brain power into getting all the hooks you need for various things, etc. it just seemed like a better investment to buy a modular system specifically designed for this.. The one I got was only $60 and I have a large array of attachments I can use that I don't have to attach to a 2x4.

Sears is known to run some pretty good sales on Gladiator stuff. I setup a deal alert at slickdeals as its random but usually B1G1 free or 50% off
 
Gladiator Premier Series

Don't bother with RTA series. You'll end up buying Premier cabinets for cheaper than RTA anyway. Night and day difference in quality. The Premier series cabinets are are steal while on sale (very often). Their customer service is also top notch. They seriously take care of any problem you have with their products.
