I live in an apartment, and near the end of the summer, I'm moving down to Virginia (currently in MI). Gonna have a lot of stuff I don't want to move, so I was thinking of having a garage sale. Problem is, I have no garage. I live in a townhome / apartment complex with very little space outside.

I've been trying craigslist with not much luck, so I'm thinking about this, but worried by the lack of space to hold this. Should I just keep going on craigslist? Or has anyone had experience doing garage sales in an apartment?
 
Try putting up some flyers in your complex with a phone number and items you are trying to get rid of.
 
For most people, garage sales don't make sense. By the time you include advertisement costs, sign costs, and the value of your time, it usually is a money loser. That is, unless you are lucky enough to sell some expensive things. But in that case, they are often better off sold on Craigslist, EBay or by some other method.

Most people should sell items individually or donate them all. If you itemize deductions, you can make a killing on tax savings. Compare that to a money loser for many garage sales. Of course, you have to be able to itemize deductions for this to benefit you.

People around here have sidewalk sales all the time. They also put pictures of everything on Picasa or something with prices. Look at for sale in New York City. It's full of people who sell stuff from their apartments. Moving sales too.

There's your problem. At least in colleges in my area, people just throw things out. I've picked up some good stuff by cruising college areas at end of term.
