Garage Floor Pourable Surface

Modeps

Lifer
I've seen this stuff advertised around here and there... I dont know the actual name but they say you can pour this stuff over your garage floor, smooth it out, and sprinkle this tread stuff on top, and it'll make it easy to clean up oil, spills, etc... as well as make it look nicer than just concrete. Has anyone used it? Know it's actual name? Pluses, Minuses, info in general?

Yeah it is, I cant tell how much it's supposed to cover though, I'm betting I'll probably need at least 3 gallons for a 2 car garage.

The rustoleum epoxy is great. I thought you were talking about an ardex overlay at first.

Edit: Oh and the gallon covers 250 square feet.

250? holy cow that's a lot. $57 doesnt seem that bad after all!
it's basically just like using a roller to paint walls after washing it out? I can do that.

Yes but i suggest etching it muriatic acid while getting it really clean. Also I have usually done two coats.

Sorry, I'm not really sure what you said. What's Muriatic Acid do for ya?

If your concrete has a troweled surface (slick) it creates an etched profile (opens up pores) to promote better adhesion. Also apply the paint with a 1/4 -3/8" nap.

May explain

Um... coating a garage floor sounds like fun. Too bad you're not in SoCal or me in Conn... I'd offer to help!

The kit says it comes with "EpoxyShield concentrated surface cleaner no muriatic acid etching" any idea how that compares to the muriatic acid jobber?

Well that price isn't so bad then if it covers 250 sf.

beware. as is typical with these types of things (paint, paint stripper, etc.) the coverage is the IDEAL condition. You will often find something that claims to cover 250 sf actually may only do 175.

I am sure it probably works. I always etch with muriatic acid. I do a lot of decorative concrete work on the side which includes acid staining, poly staining, etching engraving, sandblast stenceling, and overlays. I have on occasion used the Rustoleum paint by customer request but at the time it did not come with a surface etcher. I do not suggest Valspar.

The whole "you get what you pay for" arguement I presume. The more work you put in, the better it'll come out... I'll keep this in mind, thanks for your advice!

I painted my 2-car garage floor about a year ago. I used a good quality grey garage floor paint, with a sand additive to increase traction, and let me tell you I am paying for a lack of surface preparation. I basically swept, vacuumed and mopped, that's it. No acid wash.

The paint has bubbled and flaked-off in numerous areas, and the family and I are constantly bringing small flakes into the house on our shoes. Not to mention that we're graced by patches where you can see the green paint underneath.

Take it from me, invest the time and money to prepare the surface properly (see other links in this post.) Also, I would highly recommend a better-quality covering like something rubber or epoxy based.

There are even more expensive solutions than the Home Depot / Lowe's do-it-yourself jobs, I think there are even services that will come and lay down expensive coatings for you.

Don't skimp on the preparation or the materials. You want to do this only one time and have it last and look good. It will have to live up to vehicle use, standing water, (in my case) snow/ice/salt, and all the other abuses that a garage floor will have to withstand.

Just my $0.02
