Gandalf can make his horse run really fast.

And he can make light come from his staff.

What else can he freaking do?

How come he doesn't use magic to fight the orcs? He just uses his sword and staff.

None of the magic in LOTR was agressive except for causing fear. All action was done by muscle.

Nothing more fun than an approaching army of dwarves in mithril plate when you have chain-lightning loaded up...

gandalf and the other wizards weren't wizards like in lesser fantasy books, these guys were a different SPECIES of being, remember that monster gandalf fought in the first movie? well, gandalf, saruman and the others are the same type of creature.

the battle scenes in ROTK wasn't about the power of Gandalf, Aragorn or any other single character, it was about the suscepibility of great power to the weak, sauron to frodo.

tolkien doesn't throw around spells and such just to make things look cool.

The Five Wizards were sent to Middle Earth to combat the power of Sauron.

However, they were not to use their power directly against him, they were supposed to "move others to great deads" which is what Gandalf did mostly. They said after that he may have been aided by one of the Three Rings (Narya, or The Ring of Fire)) which was given to him by Cirdan the Shipwright.

Gandalf was the only wizard to stay true to his mission - Saruman "defected", Radagast went off into the woods, and the other two went off into the east of Middle Earth and weren't heard from again.

Another tidbit - Sauron, the Balrog, Gandalf and the other wizards are all of the race "Maiar", who came from "outside" of the earth (or Arda) in the very beginning.

If you guys want fireballs and lightning bolts, read David Eddings or something :p.

BTW, for all your LOTR buffs out there - you'll REALLY enjoy THIS site. It's one of the most comprehensive Tolkien databases I've seen. The section on Tom Bombadil is pretty interesting.

Who sent the wizards?

The Valar.

From the Encyclopedia of Arda:

" 'Valar' is the name given to the fourteen powerful spirits who took physical form and entered Arda after its creation to give order to the world and combat the evils of Melkor. They dwelt originally on the Isle of Almaren, but after its destruction long ages before the Awakening of the Elves they removed to Aman and there founded the realm of Valinor."

FYI, Melkor was Sauron's boss in the Second Age.

Read the Silmarillion, it gives the history behind everything. The only other book written by Tolkein concerning Middle Earth (with the exception of The Hobbit of course).

Megatomic - I apologize in advance in the event that you're going to lose countless hours reading on that site. Unfortunately for me, I found it during a break from studying for exams - d'oh :D

Don't sweat it Rhombuss, I was planning on nabbing copies of The LOTR, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion already. I tried to read The S. a long time ago but I was too young (13) to stay interested in it. 20 years later I think I'm ready. :)
