This is a pretty good article on notebook GPUs. The 7600 is comparable to the x1600. It also described the problems with high end gpus in ultraportables. Remember that there needs to be a certain heat dissipation ability. Ultraportables can carry the fans that larger laptops can. For a 7600 Go, try the Asus a8JM but that is a 14" which I guess you're not interested in...

TBH the Asus a8JM is probably what I will get. Bigger than the 13.3, but by no means "big". Need to find a good place to buy one now.

OK, last post.. really. It really is between the Asus a8jm or the Asus W3j. Does anyone know of a good place to order these online. I would want a place that can customize the configuration, as I would want 2 gigs or ram, 100 gig 7200 rpm hd, 2.16 proc. etc etc.

I wonder which is lighter what are the differences? i mean the only difference I can see between the 2 is the video, 7600 vs. x1600.

The W3J is a nicer machine as it comes from Asus' top-of-the-line notebook series. The A8Jm is meant to be more mainstream. About the weight, the W3J will probably be a little lighter b/c they use carbon fiber and not just plastic to assemble the chasis. Also, from real world performance tests, I think the MR X1600 ends up being a little bit better than the 7600 Go.
I ordered my W3J from Proportable.com, but idk if they can customize it. You can check out places like C9Tech.com, AllAsus.com, and GenTech if you want to have it customized.

You have any UK sites? Those are all US, and most do not even ship to here =)

The two cards are soo close, and I prefer Nvidia.. 256 megs + 256 turbocache (mem sharing) is more versitile than the flat 256 the x1600 comes with IMHO. Not trying to start an ATI vs. Nvidia conversation here, just stating that the cards are close enough that preference can make the difference. Now its down to weight and sexyness of the actual rig =)

Actually, the X1600 does memory sharing too (up to 512MB).

As for where to buy in the UK, I'm unfamiliar with any online stores, but a google search came up with Laptops Direct and Asus Laptop, but I don't know how good those stores are or even if they are legit.

Edit: Using IE (didn't work with Firefox), go to Asus' website (link) and select UK on the list of places. Then go to the where to buy and it should bring up a list of stores that sell Asus notebooks.

WOW that benchmark site has the Quadro FX 2500M doing 18085 in 3DMark03!?!?!? I thought that was an open GL card and would not do so well in direct x applications!? I ended up going with an IBM t60p with the v5200 and 14" screen, my benchies put me at 6258 for 3DMark03, but I figured the Quadro FX 2500M would be on the same level as the v5200 since there both open GL cards both have 256 dedicated, and another 256 shared. Why the heck does the Quadro kick so much a$$?

I was also looking for portable with some decent gaming, my T60P has done the trick pretty good. The v5200 is a bit underclocked but powerstrip takes care of that, also downloading the omega drivers got me from low 5000's to my 6258 (at stock clock speeds.) With the 14" screen it is not to big and not to little IMO. I am actually installing ATI desktop drivers tonight and going to benchmark those vs the Omega drivers in 3DMark03 and 05 so I will keep you posted as to what I get. I almost went with the m1210 but after reading some benchies I quickly decided against it!

Well I benchmarked the desktop drivers vs the omega, and the omega did better.

I messed around with overclocking on the omega a bit and was able to get my 3DMark03 up to 7411! Pretty damn nice up from 5064 from normal drivers and no O/C. This puts it above the 7600go and it is all packed into something very small and light.

I have personally played with the 1210, and it is pretty thick! My think pad is alot thinner and does not feel but a tad bit heavier (I think it is 5-6 pounds)
