I don't know why everyone is so overly concerned about the PSU. I have been using an OCZ 700w GameXStream for more than two years when it finally crapped out on me. This was 100% due to my error. I was neglecting the vent on the bottom of the PC and most likely the PSU choked on dust to death. (And there was indeed a thick layer of dust there) Still, OCZ didn't even ask me any questions and replaced my PSU for a brand new better one. That PSU is still on my shelf, unopened. I bought a new 600w StrealthXStream while I was waiting for my replacement, and it's been going strong two years and counting.

I admit, that I know absolutely nothing about PSUs, but from my experience I just don't see a reason to spend a lot of money on a high end PSU when my system is only worth $700 or so.

Oh, the horror of this build... The HORROR. You're going to void the warranty on two $300 video cards and fry your build with that OCZ PSU?

Are you going to tell me your OS is going to go on your Hitachi for now?

Gaming on an i7? I'll tell you the i5 2500K is the i7 2600K, then take the money and spend it on something useful... It would be better spend on a 7 serving meal at onea them fancy restaurants people who like to waste money go to lol. In fact, that second 6950 could be put toward a great week long binge on expensive restaurants. Why not, the plating is beautiful... the atmosphere is nice 😛.

In all seriousness these are all very real problems with your build. You are cheaping out where it really counts (PSU for example) and spending money on features you won't effectively utilize (i7 over i5, CFX isn't cost effective). You should have come to us before you ordered all the cheap parts, as they are expensive to ship back and aren't worth keeping. You just blew all the money you saved buying cheap twice over...
 
My OS is going on my SSD. why is xfiring 6950's that bad? I'm fine with you saying my build is bad and all, just give good reasons not analogies.
What did i "cheap out" on other then the PSU? I looked at reviews of the hitachi and they like it... Yes it's not the best HD but its mid-high tier based on what I read.

It's not "bad", just overkill. By the time you notice a difference in anything besides a benchmark you'll see much cheaper cards with better performance. It would also allow you to save money on the motherboard and PSU by sticking with a single card. Assuming you are running 1920 x 1080 you won't have a problem with a single 6950. The main issue I have is that you are going to void the warranty on both cards and power them on that shotty PSU.

As for the Hitachi, the company has a bad rep, and normally $5-$10 will get you a much more reputable brand, and a little better performance too.
 
Ok, but I'm on a 1500 budget. Which really is enough to buy a near top of the line gaming computer and the xfire 6950's are best bang for your buck at my budget iirc. I probably will end up dropping the 2600k down to a 2500k but I'm missing out on the larger cache and threads. The PSU I'm looking to get a better one and I guess I can just let this one collect dust for the mean time...

The best bang for your buck is saving $400 between the second card/ mobo/ PSU and getting another card at the same price range around 2-3 years down the road IMO. Maybe even drop down to the 2500K and get a 6970 for ~$50 more, then get something in the $350 range down the road.

That really is the best plan. I'd say the PSU was the most risky part of the build. Sorry it had to go down like that :/ .

The thing is I don't want to be upgrading 2-3 years. More like 5~ and get a whole new rig cause technology is advancing really quickly

Sorry, but this makes no sense. A 5 year old rig is going to be dog slow, no matter how much money you spent on it. David's plan is much better.

Which is exactly why you should upgrade in 2-3 years instead of 5 years. If you want something uber-high-end today, you're gonna pay a huge price premium for something that is only marginally better.
