Gaming Question w Lan Only Games / Over the Net

Heres my scenario.

Me and a few friends want to play some of our old beloved Lan only games. But we are not on same network. Hes on DSL and I am on a Cable Modem.

My question is, is there software or a online service that makes this possible? I know the Zone used to have a Virtual LAN type thing that me and many friends played Duke Nukem 3D through but it seems to have been removed as a service.

Is there another program we could launch that would create a simulated lan type enviroment between our two computers for the purpose of playing these older games?

I am pretty computer savvy but I am not real proficent with all thats involved with networking. So if at all possible a computer program, or service like the Zone used to provide would just be awesome.

Also another question if I could. Anyone know a way to slow games down? I loved the Perfect General II and still have my cds for this. But playing it now is almost ludicrious. I must get like 10,000 fps as everything just moves so fast it is mind numbing.

To play games like that, you need to set up a VPN. This is best done with hardware like a VPN router so you off load this from your computer.

Not really looking to invest that much in it if at all possible. I guess I also hesitate more as I have done it through just software in the past so am hoping that I can still find a working program or provider. I have looked all over the MSN Gaming zone and have been unable to find it. I am guessing it was dropped because most new games do work fine without lan.

I also heard Kali may be a possibility so going to check up on that some as well.

Wait, do you have XP ? It can do a software VPN. It's not the most secure, but it's fine for games.

Well was going to come back and post I found another way to do it. Was a big blast from the past Kali. Was using it and it worked perfect for me and my friend on Ipx. Hopefully I can find my serial as I registered it years ago but dont remember which email address it was with (My cable companies changed hands like 3 times in the last 4 years).

But may give VPN a shot to as that would probably be better, well at least chaper

Yeah, just setup a vpn connection on each side, one to listen one to send. If you both have XP then it should be a piece of cake, you just need to make a user on the listening machine. If only have XP you should listen as setting up a VPN on other OS's takes a little bit more knowledge.
