what parts can I buy to build a gaming pc for $500. Something that can run Skyrim on Max and can run other modern games on ultra.

Intel Z68 motherboard 200$
2500k cpu 200$ (to play Skyrim on ultra)
8gb ddr3 memory 55$
gtx570 or 6970 300$+
good name brand 650+ watt power supply 90$

This is as good as it gets under $500, don't even dream about high settings with that budget.

That's WAY past $500

You need a 2500k to run Skyrim at max settings.
You need at least a gtx570//6970 to run modern games at ultra detail.

Like I said "he might have to up his budget" or settle for high settings.

Happy Medium is correct. You need about $1000 to contemplate running modern games on ultra at 1080P. Is that within your means?

Just set the resolution to 1280 x 720 or lower than you can run on ultra with a cheaper gpu.
OP never mentioned his resolution you know.
