I recently noticed these lcd/tv monitors are getting cheaper, I have a big screen tv which is 16:9 and it stretches 4:3 programs to fit on the screen, are these lcd pc/tv monitors any good for gaming, I'm looking at 27-30 inch screens.. does anybody run unreal tournament 2k4 on one of these and how does it look? i've been looking at syntax olevia brand, and powerspec from microcenter. I know the powerspec has like a 17ms response time..any suggestions?

I have the Olevia 27 inch and love it...however I would wait for the faster refresh rate 26 that is coming out...should be superior with a 12ms refresh rate.

Had problems with 6800 series making it look right but My 9800pro is beautiful.

PM if you have other questions.

I've heard that gaming on these is actually not too bad, provided you have one with a DVI input. The resolution is usually 1280x768 if I remember correctly.

In order to run UT2004 in widescreen you will have to edit your UT2004.ini file located in \UT2004\System\.

look for the section labelled:

[WinDrv.WindowsClient]

and add:

16:10 FOV = 100.38886
16:9.6 FOV = 102.68038

underneath the line that reads:

Default FOV = 90

Then you have to define your resolution. This is what I have for my 1680x1050 LCD:

WindowedViewportX=1680
WindowedViewportY=1050
FullscreenViewportX=1680
FullscreenViewportY=1050

You should alter this to reflect the resolution of your screen.

You're done! Enjoy UT2004 in full widescreen glory.

If you are planning on doing any widescreen gaming, you should check out:

http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/

These guys have a cool thing going on and a very helpful forum devoted specifically to gaming in widescreen.

I am gaming on a 16:10 monitor... the Dell 2005FP. Wow, works great. For quake3 I had to manually set the resolution..being an older game.

Set quake3 to custom resolution settings

set r_customaspect 1
set r_customheight 1050
set r_customerwidth 1680
set r_mode -1

Quake looks way cool ;-) Plays the same... just see more.

I am not sure Halo will view properly. I saw screenshots at the widescreen web site and it was really stretched
Now, I see a 1280 x 720 and 728 and 780 in my current halo video settings
Would this make the 2005fp view properly ?

but i see the 2001 is marked down a lot right now at dell and if Ic an add 25% off that that I might not be able to justify the wide screen, even if it works
I also have HL2 and Far cry, those I know will work but $$ is a factor

So, 2005 or 2001, opinions please

...scroll down to the Sept 10th entry. There is an FOV hack for Halo you can download. I don't have Halo for PC, but the guys on widescreengamingforum.com seem to like it.

http://www.widescreengamingfor...iewtopic.php?t=98&

The reason the screenshots on the forum look really wide is because that guy who posted them uses three monitors and a Matrox card for surround gaming, not just widescreen.

As far as choosing between the 2001FP and the 2005FPW goes, it is a tough decision and I wrestled with it quite a bit myself before deciding on the 2005FPW. My major concern was would the 2005FPW be tall emough. Now that I have it, I really like it, and I'm glad I went wide... Some games do require a bit of tweaking, and some just won't work at all properly. So, do some research on widescreengamingforum.com to determine if the games you like can be played in widescreen. If the games you like can be played in widescreen, I think you will be happy with the 2005FPW. Either way that you go, I think that both the 2001FP and the 2005FPW are nice screens for the money.

My only question at this point: when is AT going to add 1680x1050 as a standard benchmark resolution for video card reviews?

Thanks for that info
I have aBFG Gerforce 6800 GT OC so it's plenty of card and it should support this just fine. In fact my Sony trinitron can't refresh fast enuf at all. Halo is very poor for FPS as it was just not ported to PC worth a crap but when i got the 6800 it cured the 20fps crap rates when i wanted details all on and a high res.

Now, it's so fast i had to tear or turn on vsync to stop the tearing

as soon as I can get a 25% off for the 2005 i will get it. I am guessing Dell might even lower it any day now.
if someone knows of a code to get the 25% off now please PM me or mail me

Thanks a lot

ps : i have a widescreen compaq and i love it. I am not sure it's the same width but it might be. I need to go check it but it is 30% wider and it really is nice especially for movies and for work

My eyes are bothering me a LOT these days especially if the distance is not right for me from eye to monitor.
I was told LCDs are just easier on the eyes and I work on my PC so I really need whatever is best for my eyes
The games I know are best on a CRT with a high arse refresh rate but I don't want a 100pd monster sitting here, lol
This 17 inch sony if heavy enuf and so deep it's pathetic

For the price to get a little better. I just paid off that video card and anyone that knows that card knows it ain't cheap. It was not a Ultra though but I saved 200 bucks gettin a BFG. Great company that overclock out of the box
I can actually run this card over the Ultras specs but I am leaving it alone, it's fine as it is
