If you're building new, why mess with dual card setup? Just get a GTX 260-216 or a 4870 1GB and you're done. Also, no need for a more expensive SLI/CF motherboard, just get a P45 board with solid OC capability and enjoy.

Yes..Deni hit it right on the head.

You have a last gen computer and the sontata case with the psu is perhaps what? an EA 500? It won't be able to power two 9800GT's SLI'd very well, or it will come close anyways

Take your pick if your ATI/NV fanboi they are both great cards IMO. Also get the 45nm quad...they are getting cheap now..Q9300..if you get the P45 I Suppose you could CF the 4850's..but i'd still go for a stronger 1 card solution

To answer your question: Yes, two HD4850's is PLENTY to max out a piddly 22" incher's 1680x1050 resolution.

I have that monitor and the native resolution is low enough a single 8800GT has done everything I've needed. Remember you have a 60 fps limit on the display anyway, so even if your card(s) can punch out 100+ you won't be getting that much of a benefit over and above 'tearing.'

You're asking for pain with multi-GPU, IMO. But if you absolutely must have the multi-GPU epeen go CF and an Intel chipset. One 4870 will do you, if you really want the epeen get another after you've tried it. You may need a beefier PSU once you do though.

Frys has a 9400 quad for $199 right now. Get that instead of the Q6600.

I use that resolution with a single 4850 and I've played Crysis, Bioshock, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Call of Juarez, and Assassin's Creed with great results. The only time I've EVER had points in a game with low framerates was in Crysis, at all high settings. Most levels were 25ish on Crysis, but the ice world would sometimes drop down to around 18. But all the other games I've mentioned have typically had frame rates of 45 and above.

This.

A good P45 board-- perhaps a single PCIE slotter (Asus, Gigabyte, Biostar)-- and a 4870 1GB or a 4870X2 if it's in your budget and you're good to go.
