Gaming Mousepad

Because I have a short keyboard shelf custom pads wont fit.
I use a stainless steel sheet which also extends my keyboard shelf.
 
I have a Roccat Taito, nice mat. To be honest just look at some mats and see which one you like the look and more importantly the feel of. I like the Taito because I got the medium so I have more than enough space, as I use something like 2400dpi on my mouse.
 
I am currently using a Razer Goliathus pad. It has a nice feel (speed edition). I also recently used a cheap "freebie" pad from work which also worked well but wasn't really big enough if you play games at a high sensitivity. Previously, I used a Rocketfish hard pad. The Rocketfish pad was also nice, but I just have a personal preference for cloth pads now.

The Razer pad is huge. Although not as big as the Razer, the Rocketfish was much larger than a cheap pad and easily big enough for gaming.

The Razer is so big that I actually use it sideways. I like it this way as I can keep my wrist rest on the bottom of the pad with my mouse near the top without having to worry about the wrist rest sliding around the table which can be a problem with smaller pads.

My main complaint about all the gamer mousepads is that the rest of my computer is fairly understated with black/grey/silver gear whereas the Razer mousepad had lime green highlights and the Rocketfish has red highlights. I should have gone with the Steelseries QCK+ pad.
 
Razer Vespula. Two surfaces so you have options. Best mousing surface I've ever had the pleasure to own. Somebody knew what they were doing.

Not my image, but it's all about the size. For 20 bucks, you really can't get any better if you have the space. As well it doesn't fray as fast as the Razer pads.

I recommend Zowie pads. I haven't owned Puretrak, but my Zowie G-TF SpawN glides extremely well, stays put, is big, comfortable and well built. It is almost 2 years old and it's as good as new.
 
QcK are low cost, but also cheaply built as their edges are not fray resistant or stitched. I would not be surprised if yours wears out from the edge in less than a year - mine started to fray in less than 6 months. In the long term, you're probably going to save more money by getting a fray resistant mat.

The friction on QcK is also higher than on Zowie, for example. But that's more of a matter of preference.
 
I would recommend staying far far away from hard mousepads; I wore down my steelseries something or other within a month of owning it and had to toss it. Other than that, there's no difference between a normal and gaming mousepad. Just get the one that's the right size for you.
 
Found a nice flat piece of vinyl, cut it to shape of half my wrap-around desk, Glued it in place................bought a Logitech G9x Laser (5600dpi)..........works flawlessly

Haha, no difference? Yeah, you seem like a real expert on the matter. Which normal mouse mat even comes in sizes on the order of 40-55cm per side? Or has fray resistant edges? Or glide nearly as good as plastic? Or easy-to-clean stain and water resistant surface? These are all features you can only find in mats advertised for gamers, and not all gaming mats have them all.

Also, all of the non-gaming pads I've used don't glue to the table well enough, they move about very easily.

Most "Gaming" mousepads are just larger cuts of a high quality regular mousepad and some logos printed on.
 
most of the difference is the mouse itself..............spend here

and my NON-fraying hugh piece of Vinyl glued to the table with contact cement..........good as the day I put it in.............12 years now.......Oh so smooth

or spend lots on something that is Marketed just for you

Most gaming mousepads are actually pretty bad. Personally I think the razor cloth mats have too thick a weave and it impacts on the quality of the movement of the mouse. From the pads I have played with the QCK and the Puretrak pads both have a finer weave that does not have the same issue, but still gives enough resistance to provide good control.

There are a few models out there that are decent, but most mouse pads are rubbish. Equally a lot of people don't play competition FPS games and hence wont notice how bad their pad and mouse is but that doesn't mean in the grand scheme of things its good.

I blame the entire situation on the review sites. Places like Anandtech seem convinced that the only thing that matters is the shape of the mouse and its software, whereas actually in practice most mice have flawed sensor designs that result in terrible movement characteristics that impact on gaming. Particular mouse pads are also problematic with certain mice and aren't really very good quality. The places that do the reviews of these things well are a lot more underground and smaller than places like Anandtech. But what they lack in size they make up for in terms of really testing the mice and pads properly, all be it as a group effort.

People have this impression mice are all good and pads are all good. I look at a market full of rubbish and just a few products worth having, all of which have trade offs and minor problems.
 
Considering pretty much any cheap mousepad allows most mice to perform to their sensors limit, I think your rant is a little over the top.

Every once in a while you get an exception, like the Zowie AM's terribly focused lens has problems with colored surfaces, but this isn't the 90's anymore. It's not a big deal. Get something that has the texture and size you want.
 
After going through numerous mats over the years, I settled on a Puretrak Talent a couple of years ago and have been using it ever since. Love the size, smooth tracking and control it offers.

i use a SteelSeries QcK Heavy right now, no issues with edge fraying. the razor one i had has those issues

Xtrac Ripper XXl. The guy in the picture has his setup like a noob, the entire mousepad is blocked by the keyboard.

It really helps in games like Quake where you need to do random 360s while tracking someone with the lightning gun at a low sensitivity. It takes a while to learn that you don't need to lift your mouse off ever when it gets ingrained to muscle memory.

It is a PITA to get the mouse cord at the perfect length however. You need to leave yourself with enough to get to the far right, but it can start to get in your way when you need to go far left.

I just got this last month and it's a pleasure to work on. I also wanted a mat that would be durable as well as comfortable. :thumbsup:
