I have never really had a decent gaming mouse and would be interested in the current thoughts on these two. I like to buy most things locally and Target had the mx518se for $39.99 and Walmart had the intellimouse explorer 3.0 for $29.78. I have small hands and from the looks of the mx518se will probably be the better fit. I guess I need to do a little research on my own since I have never even heard of the "se" version of the mx518 but I thought I would go ahead and get some opinions in the meantime.

both are wayyy overpriced, i'd look elsewhere to buy a mouse

Im using a MX518 i got from work for free, works fine. Can be too sensitive at times but it is no problem. I previously used an MX500

For $58 shipped after rebate you could get a Logitech G9. It has a small skin that would be good for smaller hands. I used a web link because they will probably be outrageously expensive to buy locally. I can't comment on the 2 specific mice you mentioned, but I swear by Logitech products, and that's the only brand I'll buy for gaming mice.

i've had an mx300, mx500, mx518, and now the g9.... i love my g9, but the mx518/500 are both good too... can't say i notice any difference between the 500 and 518...

Seems overpriced to me, got my MX500 for 12$ about 3 years ago.

My cousin got three Laser Revolution mice for 20$ each

I guess it was a much easier decision than I thought it would be. the explorer felt like a cheap piece of crap and the side buttons were flimsy and lacked any type of feedback. the mx518se feels like a much more quality mouse and fits my hand much better too. Im still not sure what "se" means and its not even listed on Logitech's site. it appears to have the same specs as the regular mx518 but lacks the dented look and is red.

a few quick questions on the mx518

1. since this is my first optical mouse does it matter what type or color the mouse mat is to get the best performance?
2. do I actually need to install the software?
3. does it matter if I use usb or ps/2 connection?

I have teh mx510 (previous version of 518) Black surfaces work better. Smooth or clothed your choice. I chose smooth. You don't have to install the software. Doesn't matter if you use USB or ps/2 connection.

ok thanks and I did buy a cheap black mouse mat today. I would get a really good gaming mat but they are too big for my little keyboard/mouse tray.

MX518 is the best by far. I have the explorer 3.0 at work and would hate this mouse for games. My wife has the G5... it's nice but that side to side scroll thing is terrible if you set your middle mouse to jump like I do.

I recently bought the G5 (version 2) and I love it. Logitech mouses have always been great. I have larger hands and they fit the bill. MX500 -> MX510 -> G5v2 and they all still work.

sorry but it felt like a cheap piece of junk and side buttons lacked any type of feedback. even if the explorer 3.0 would have fit my hand it was still going to be returned.

Nothing has yet beat the MX510/518 for all around gaming IMO. You can't even tell the difference with anything over 1600 DPi and the button layout is perfect. The only thing the more expensive mice have over it are programmable macros if you're into that sorta thing.

I'm not sure if the software is required to get this functionality, but the 518 supports different DPI settings on the fly with the buttons in front of and behind the mouse wheel.

For $40, the best mouse is the Creative HD7600. The HD lazer on this mouse is amazing! No slight of cursor movement when it's lifted. Try it out!

I'd get the MX518, however I'd try to find a better price elsewhere.

It's a pretty old mouse by now and shouldn't cost that much.

well the msrp is $49.99 but $39.99(what I paid) seems to be the price almost everywhere. I already have it so theres no point in taking in back just to see if I can find it on sale because even place like newegg arent any cheaper.

Disregard EVERYTHING anyone else has said so far.

MX518 is the BEST gaming mouse available

Reasons:

1. It is manually adjustable to 1000hz
2. NO annoying left/right middle clicks "trust me" this is the biggest reason.
3. Very light
4. Peak of optical led tech before laser. in Essense "perfection"

I love the tilt wheel on my G5. I don't use my middle click anymore (partly because it's next to impossible to middle-click), but side-tilting makes it a lot easier to hit the middle button (which, for me, is mapped to left-tilt) in a tense FPS situation.
