There are actually 2 versions of that mouse. A 1600 dpi and an updated 1800 dpi version. The latter model is the one available in etailers now. Anyway, you are right regarding the DPI you wont notice any difference as you go higher.

My guess is this is probably a firmware update, and the mouse itself is physically the same, resulting in shit performance. If this is true, I would probably be pissed if i got one of the 1800 DPIs and it acted like crap. Don't ask me why Logitech felt like it had to squeeze 200 more dpi out of hardware that was engineered for 1600. Idiots.

I am really not sure what point you are tying to make, but its not a firmware upgrade, its a hardware one. The appearance did not change, just the optical sensor was upgraded.

You are trying too hard nikhil. The difference between optical and laser is very subtle. In an optical mouse you will observe a bright red light being emitted from the underside of the body. Now, while playing a game like CS late nights it might be a distraction for you. Laser mouse will emit no visible light, there is nothing exciting on the underside to see so you will concentrate on playing competitively rather than looking at the mouse.

If you are really attracted to bright lights, I would not recommend an optical mouse cos you get easily distracted and will be pwned by a noob with a ball mouse.

On a serious note, it all depends on your budget. You said Rs 2000 and all I can see is the MX 518 available in India. I don't see X3 being sold there. All I see are X5's and X8's which are very expensive for your budget. Anyway, as I said if bright red lights are not suitable for you, go for the x3, if not go for the MX 518.

My personal choice would be the MX 518.

Yasasvy, that's an interesting chart. What's the x-axis measuring?

Oh, x-axis is the total points scored for that mouse. This chart is from 2007. ESreality did a roundup of mouses in 2007 and came up with that chart. They compared both optical and laser mouses.. er mice.. which basically shows that laser mouse is equal or better than an optical one. This was the first and last roundup they ever did.

I've been using an MX518 for a couple years and it is great. However, laser mice do track better on some surfaces like hard woods, so they may not require a mouse pad when an optical (LED) one does.

Well then i stand corrected, still though, adding 200dpi isnt really worthit on that mouse, but to each thier own.

Not sure how the 518 could be any kind of distraction unless you are picking it up off the desk. With it on the desk flat, there is no light to be seen.

A mouse is a mouse. My favorite is still my MX700 cordless. It's 900dpi if I remember right, and is the most comfortable mouse I've used. I'm using a G9 now, which has better specs in every category, but I still prefer the MX700.

He was responding to my comments. I was just being sarcastic, nothing to be take seriously.

I like the MX518. Logitech's always treated me right, and that's the standard in gaming mouse shape imo.

All reviews r with mx 518 though sidwindor has 2000 dpi and laser ..........

AFAIC you can't go by reviews for a mouse. As long as people aren't saying it breaks in 2 months, it largely comes down to personal preference. All the DPI, customizable keys, and looks aren't worth a thing if it doesn't feel good in hand. Comfort is the main thing with a mouse, not features. You'll game better with a mouse that feels right than you will with one that has insane DPI and features. I said above my favorite gaming mouse is a MX700. It isn't really a gaming mouse by any stretch, but the way it was setup made it right for me.

Sadly with buying online, you have to get one, and then hope for the best. If you can't put your hand on it in a store or anything, it comes down to luck whether it's going to be the right mouse for you or not. The MX518 is a proven physical design(which incidentally the MX700 shares) that people have loved for years. I can vouch for the MX518 as being a quality mouse. Whether or not it's right for you is hard to say; you'll have to try it to find out. You'd have that issue with any mouse you can't try before buying though.
