I was using an MX510 up until June of 2008 which I was extremely happy with. When I built my new rig, I "upgraded" to the MX518 to which I am fairly dissatisfied. The lack of support on older games for the M3/M4 buttons as well as the Page Up and Page Down buttons was a massive let-down which hampered my ability for several older games (D2, Unreal Tournament, Star Craft, etc.). Also, the extra software requirement for the MX518 also produced several problems with Vista 64-bit which took about a month for Logitech support to correct.

Well, it is getting to that time of the year where I am looking for upgrades as my current peripherals are showing a bit of wear. Can someone recommend a good gaming mouse? Preferably one with a button configuration similar to the MX500 series.

What do you mean lack of support for the M3/M4 buttons? You should be using the Setpoint software to assign those buttons.

Logitech's latest Setpoint software for Win7 64(I assume works for Vista 64) works fine with all of my logitech devices.

I do use Setpoint's software, but in order to use those M buttons for certain older games, I need to go into the application and manually reassign those two buttons to other functions. Then I must go in-game and reassign those buttons to the functions to which they were previously set. Then when I am done with the game, I must go back into the application and re-assign them back to what they normally are set as.

I use the M buttons a lot out of gaming and constantly re-assigning those two buttons becomes a massive hassle. Also, the application supposedly has the ability to assign profiles, but it always reverts back to default upon start-up which requires I must go dick around with the settings anyways if I wish to use those two or four buttons for my older games. The older MX510 did not require any third-party utilities to utilize these buttons and I am baffled why the newer MX518 requires the Setpoint utility.

I know for Diablo II at least you need to run in compatibility mode as Windows XP for the mwheel/4/5 to work.
