The sager one does look quite nice but again not avaliale in NZ, it looks like i will have to order it from the US or somewhere like that. Im wondering what is the next best mobile graphics card after the go6800, is it the 256mb X700 or the 128mb (or is there a 256mb) go6600? or is it something else entirly?

Now I am not a big fan of AMD (for reasons i will not discuss) but i would think that if you wanted to buy a gaming laptop, then you would want to go with an A64 rather than a P/M. In that case I would seriously look at Voodoo PC or the Acer Ferraris.

Thats not actually true, i read a whole review on Tomshardware where they overclocked a Dothan to 2.5GHz and ti was beating the Athlon FX, P4EE and normal P4s, in all 3D gaming benchmarks.

ANd price is a factor to me jst not a particulary important one.

I stand corrected. In that case go w/ the XPS Gen. 2

I'd have to say the Geforce Go 6600 would be your next best bet. I'd look into a Toshiba Tecra A4, Toshiba Qosmio G20, or an Asus Z71V.

I didn't think the 9300's available in NZ, but apparently it is. In that case, go for it.

Check out the dell precision M70

Its based on the quatro 1400, basically an underclocked 6800.

Slower than the 9300/xps-2 but a much more portable 15.4" formfactor, plus like the lattitudes you get US support and killer docking stations/port replicators....

Course unless dell is running a special precisions and lattitudes cost some $$$$$$.

Thanks for the advice, so far its looking like the Asus Z71V would fit my needs, of course as usual its not avaliable in NZ but it should come out here over hte next month hopefully. Or i do like the Inspiron 9300 although that gets stupidly expensive here when you add the go6800 to it so i would have to wait for a dam good special lol.
One other question is DDR2 ram the same for laptops as it is for desktops?
And to teh ppl sayign teh XPS thats isnt avalible in NZ as previously mentioned :(

That Asus looks OK. Only comes in a 128 meg 6600? 15" screen is good for lots of people. The 9300 with the 17" is relatively light but has a large footprint. Which one is cheaper for you? The Dell will be a little better for gaming...but the Asus won't be too far behind.

I was trying to be nice. :D. Plus I don't want to look like a 9300 pimp. (i have one) The 6600 would do in a pinch. Much better than the 9700.

I just purchased my first lappy, a Dell Precision M70 w/ 2.0, 1gb ram, Quadro 1400 (read above, basically an underclocked 6800), and a bunch of other stuff for 2600. Can't wait.

Ok thanks for your advice so far. Im wondering would a 128mb 6600 provide adequit performance most of the modern games, eg doom3 and HL2?
I like the look of this laptop from hypersonic http://secure.hypersonic-pc.com/scripts/accDetails.asp?productID=3990 and to get it shipped to new zealand it actually costs the same as a dell insprion 9300 with the X300 graphics card a 1.6ghz, and a gb of ram (yeah i know NZ has stupidly expensive prices). Of course the downside is that i would have no warranty at all on due to teh fac that its cost $200 to ship each way so unless it f**** up really bad its not worth it. (how often do ppls laptops fuk up through no fault of their own?) Does anyone have any comments on hypersonic laptops?

Also what is peoples view on waiting for the newer technology? Dual core pentium Ms (yonah) and MXM from NVidia and the next generation of mobile graphics cards. Im wondering because i dont really NEED the laptop this year (i could wait another 6 to 8 months) but i will probably need it next year when im in my second year of uni. Basically will these new technologies be worth the wait or are they likley to offer nothing worth while?
