Doom
Decent
Duke Nukem
Command & Conquer
Quake
Half-Life
Warcraft
Diablo
Everquest
Asheron's Call
Daggerfall

I think those are the games that defined gaming for a generation.

The 1990s was full of great games, each one added something to the community.

Metal Gear created the stealth action genre.

This is not to be confused with Metal Gear: Solid the PSX game.

Total Annihilation was the first rts with 3D units and a large metagame called the Galactic War. Has any other rts had a metagame like the Galactic War? It also had way more units and larger maps bringing rts games to an epic scale. And guess what, it supports 1920x1080 when most people played at 800x600. This was all in 97.

Everything about TA was big, except for the story.

Deus Ex had stealth action.

Metal Gear came out in 1987 for the MSX2. Deus Ex was 2000 I believe? Kojima couldn't achieve the action he wanted for the game with the current technology so he created a new concept / genre.

Again, as I said above, Metal Gear was released in 1987. Thief (1982) the arcade game was basically a Pac-man rip off; Thief: The Dark Project was 1998.

ah. got it. thanks for the clarification. Thief was just BETTER. Understood.

Err, no. Decent did it before Quake.

And I'm pretty sure there was one before decent.

Decent used 2D sprites for power-ups and the hostages.

Quake went the whole nine yards adding things like 3D light sources and a whole host of ways to speed up rendering.

This is a PC gaming forum.

Consoles should be excluded from the discussion.

you should've stopped at DOS. ;)

Dune II would be a landmark in my opinion.

Marathon did this earlier.
and Corperation did it YEARS earlier on the AMIGA 5 years earlier to be exact.. the first 3D poly world in FPS type game.

threads like this are sorta silly.. the old saying "history is wrote by the winners' is true.

Warcraft/starcraft will be forever known as the RTS makers.. but DUNE II was argubly the first, but Herzog Zewi on the Gensis might be considered the ORIGINAL

Wolf3d- sorry.. no there was some Wizard games before it (kens lybrinth?)

WoW- this one is so wrong.. the first 3D online world would be Meridina 59 (sudo 3d) or true 3d Everquest.

Diablo- idea stole from crusader, which in trun stole from several earlier games Hemdail, Imortal, etc.. top down isometric real time games.

3vikings- gobbliiins

it really depends on how you see it.. harldy any game "KNOWN' as a first didnt steal some part of it from earlier stuff, but the succesfull are almost always seen as the Original as nobody gives credit to the no-names.

BLIZZARD one of the most succesfull game companies int eh world has NEVER had an original idea.. they are just damn good at taking existing ideas and makeing them great.. nothing wrong with it.. but those original people deserve some credit..

take a look at APPLE.. suing for the PINCH... hell I saw that crap in Johnny Menomic the movie years before Apple ever did it.. to bad you cant copyright a movie gesture...

Not sure where this thread started with the "First" instead of game changer. One doesn't by any stretch of the imagination mean the other. it "CAN" but not necessarily. As for example, Wolfenstein may (or may not) have been the first, but I feel that Doom was the real game changer.

The same with Everquest. There may have been others before it, but really that was the one that brought MMOs into prominence.

to me, Innovation doesn't necessarily mean first. It could very well be taking an existing idea and taking it in a completely new direction.

ah sorry, Im far to used to thinking the guy who came up with the idea, even if he didnt sell a bunch of it was the innovator.. not the guy who copied and sold the most. But you are correct it is not about the FIRST, I stand corrected. Blizzard would be king then, they have pretty much made the games that everybody else tried to copy (in the last 10 years) like iD did in the 90's. they made the game everybody else tried to copy.

for me:
Pong-first video game
AD&D (intelvision)- first action RPG i played
Ultima- first RPG i played with HUGE scope- made me a RPG addict
LodeRunner- puzzle action game-again the first i ever played on the old IBM XT
Populous-amiga- first god game.. still fun to this day
DuneII- RTS!!!!!
BF42- the best squad based online game I ever played (even today its better then its spawnd children) till it jumped the shark with jet packs an crap
Wing Commander- best space combat-story game..as they say today "like being in a movie"
Everquest- god what a time waster.. i playe all the ones befoer (muds) UO, Merdian 59 etc.. but this game sucked me in for an embaressing amount of time.

Since then, nothing really new i can think of.. regenerating health (not a good thing), velcro sticky cover( not a good thing, we had Kneel down behind shit before.. now I got to hit buttons to unstick my aZZ from a wall!?) 6 hour single player missions.. remebre when almost any game took days if not weeks to beat then you got online.. now you get online and dont play anyt offlien to figure the gmae out some.

maybe DAY Z is worth a mention.. not really new, but has alot of the right stuff all combined.. to bad its on a horrible game engine. And maybe Demons Souls (or dark souls) again not new.. but in today's game climate a game thats actually making you think is refreshing..

First isn't a game changer though, unless that product does change the game. Who cares what the first smart phone was? After the iPhone came out, everyone copied that because it was THE smart phone.

People build on other people's ideas all the time. That is what innovation is all about. Taking what exists and making something new. Or taking some idea and refining it to the point where people actually WANT the thing.
