Gaming Headphones.

Well to go along with my new PC build and monitor I'm getting a pair of quality gaming headphones.

These will be used mainly for gaming and music. One thing I would like is a surround feel. Being able to pick out a player by sound, I know a few people with Sennhiser HD555's and say they can do that.

I'm looking for a pair around 175 (maybe a few dollars higher) and they will be going along with my X-Fi Platnium.

Thanks.

When it comes to 3D orientation, the quality of a headphone doesn't have much influence on the experience. The limitations are in the spatial processing of the sound card.

That said, good headphones will improve the experience in other ways, but if your only concern is the ability to pick out a player's location, you can probably save yourself a bit of cash.

Thats not all I'm concerned about but its something I'd like. These will be used for gaming, music, and watching movies so I'd like great sound quality but if it comes down to pair A for 150 without being able to pick out a player position and pair B 175 pair that can I'll get pair B for a few bucks more.

I've heard good things about those Audio Technica.

I have some older Sennheiser HD570's I love for gaming. I can't play FPS on speakers anymore because it's too hard to hear footsteps since I'm used to the phones.

Not current on Sennheiser but whatever headphones they sell for 150-200 will be a great bet. Skip the crappy headset (headphones with a mic) they are garbage. Get the Senn's designed for music.

Yeah I have no need for a headset headphone combo. I've got a mic that sit up on my desk that I talk into which works fine.

So should I go ahead and get the Audio technicas? Senn's? Which would be better for gaming?

Thanks.

Well after some searching and going on head-fi forums I think I'm going to go with the HD595's,

If anyone has any other suggestions please post them, thanks to everyone who posted before.

The open air type should generally provide better sound to the equivalent closed if the environment is quiet (and others hearing the sound is not a concern). Personally, I have closed headphones for discreet listening and speakers for not.

In any case, caveat emptor on those audiocubes prices since they want $100 for the ATH-A500 and $110 for the Pioneer SE-Monitor10 which are about the same prices as a couple years ago when I found the latter for $65 shipped elsewhere. Ergo, their markup must be obscene and they probably rely upon koo-koo headphone enthusiast forums for most of their bidness (as opposed to koo-koo computer enthusiast forums) 😉

P.S. here's 'nutha reason to be wary of the Audio Technica (or at least be prepared for the expense of replacement pads), unless they have since changed.
