well I killed my Senn PC150s today by pulling the cable out of the phones themself so I could recable them but my soldering skill are well non existent.

so I was thinking about getting a new headset is there anything under 50 bucks that would give better sound quality?

I was also thinking of instead just getting a standard set of headphones with a Zalman clip on microphone or a desktop micro phone (I've heard good things about Senn PX100s)

anyone got any thoughts?

PX100s are good for gaming, but they're open, so they'll leak sound both in and out. If you want a sealed headphone, the AKG K81DJ is a great choice. You can Buy It Now from a certain ebay seller (I'm not sure who it is, though...) for $55.

Get some monitoring headphones for gaming. You can hear footsteps and figure out exactly where they are from across the map. I got my Sennheiser HD-280 Pro's for like $60 in a HD. Look around.

From my experience, any ****** headphone is just about as capable of that as any other.

depends on the game, but in my experience its so much easier to here things with good sealed headphones.

I'd take the PX200s over them. I just bought my second pair on amazon for $45 a month or two ago. I bought some years back but they finally broke. These ones are different speakers and much better ones than they used in this model a few years ago.
