i'm a newbie, but interested in finally building my own super gaming computer. At this point in my life quality is more important than cost. i plan on either the ATI x800 pro or XT for my card. the new WD 10,000 rpm 74G HD, and i plan on at least a gig of DDR2 ram however i cant decide on the processor.

the reason is this, most of the reviews and forums i have read place the AMD64 FX-53 way out in front. only problem is the mobos seem to still have significant problems. i cant find a review of a motherboard that didnt have problems just booting up when coupled with the 939 Pin config.

ANyone have any opinion how i can get the max out of a custom rig ( without OC). would it be the 939 PIN processors or the more stable 754.
i want this computer for primarily gaming how would you do it if you had the cash???

ok first off 939's dont supprot ddr2 memory.
I would personally get the 6800gt.
If i had the cash i would get 2 raptors and raid them.
If you havet the money get the fx-53 if not get the 3800
i wasnt aware of the big problems with s939 motherboards..my friend has one and its been doing great
he has the gigabyte ga-k8nsnxp-939

also, socket 754 is no more stable then the socket 939. ddr2 memory is pointless since it performs worse then regular ddr. as for the video card, go wtih the 6800 gt or ultra. nvidia wins this generation of cards.

AMDs dont even support DDr2 and its a good thing cause it sucks. get a set of Crucial Ballistixs. things are fast as crap. Also buy those stick FROM Crucial that will save ya 10 bucks :)

Ok,

With a little OC the 3800+ can have even better results then the FX-53, and it's about 150$-200$ cheaper.
I haven't heard anything special about the Socket 939 being unstable, the 939 is a newer better version of socket/CPU's.

About the video cards, read the reviews, gaming wise, the 200$ cheaper 6800GT in some cases beats the X800XT, overclocking the 6800GT to ULTRA speeds, which is easy and in 99% of the cases doesn't affect stability, it beats the X800XT in most of the things, for 200 dollars less, and i'm being fair.

I assume you are not going to HARDCORE OverClock, so my suggestion is the Asus A8V Deluxe, or the MSI Neo2 Platinum, the Gigabyte K8NSNXP is good, but too expensive.

Never had a problem with my S939 system. It never had crashed. Socket 939 is perfectly stable. Also get the 6800GT instead the x800 pro or XT. There are not A64 MB suportting DDR2 in the meantime, which is good because this memory sucks.

Well I picked up an a64 3000/Chaintech vnf3 for $250. Aside from a few quarks, which I caused, I couldn't be happier. I'm running the 3000 @ 2.4, on the stock HSF w/ the temp at 44c.
