I built a computer and turned it on. The monitor I am borrowing won't detect the tower so what can I do? I wanted to get my OS installed.

If it turned on and nothing blew up, I built it right? There is 3 prongs unused on my psu, is that normal? Nothing to plug them into it.

The first thing you need to do is list the components of your system (case, motherboard, CPU, RAM, power supply, video card, hard drive, SSD, etc) -- please include model numbers. We need to know what you have to determine if all the components are compatible and also to know what to troubleshoot.

What make and model of power supply do you have? Also, depending upon what BIOS came installed in the motherboard, you might have to have a BIOS upgrade to support the FX6300 (requires BIOS 1006 or later).

When you turn the power on, do you get any LEDs, spinning fans, beeping, etc?

I need an adapter to use my tv as a monitor

All the fans came on and i didn't hear beeping or weird noises

PSU is a COOLER MASTER Elite 460

If you don't have a monitor, you can't go any further at this point as you don't have a way to see if the system is running.

What types of inputs does your TV have? I'm assuming that you have an XFX 7950 Core edition card? If so, I believe that card has an HDMI output, so you should be able to hook it up directly to a TV that has an HDMI port using an HDMI cable.

Ok, take the side off the case. When you turn on the power, watch the motherboard -- are there any LEDs lit up or flashing anywhere on the motherboard? If so, were are they located?

That LED should normally only light up when the BIOS flashback button is pressed for 3 seconds.

Does it come on every time you boot the machine? Is this the only LED that lights up? There should be a few others like the Standby Power LED or the DRAM LED.

Also, while you have the case open, check all the power cables. You should have the main ATX power cable plugged in to the motherboard. There is a second EATX power cable that plugs in to the motherboard - the connector is located on the edge of the motherboard near the fan headers. You also need to check that you have the power cables plugged in to your video card (you'll need to plug in two 6 pin power connectors from the power supply into the ports on the video card). With the power shut off, make sure all of these are firmly plugged in.

EDIT:

Do you have the case speaker hooked plugged in to the case speaker header on the motherboard? If so, you should hear at least one beep when the system is first started. If the case speaker is not hooked up, you need to do this for troubleshooting purposes.

There was only 1 6 pin connector? the pci connectors?

You did say you have a 7950, right? If so, how many power plugs are on top of the card? Are there two separate 6 pin power connectors there? If so, you have to plug a 6 pin power connector in to each plug.

Your power supply may have several 8 pin power connectors that separate down to a 6 pin power connector + a 2 pin power connector.

It came with a DVI to HDMI adapter and some little gold strip thingy in a baggy that says crossfire.

I hooked up the audio cord but there was no speaker on it?

The gold strip is a crossfire connector. Don't need it here.

I am not familiar with that video card. Does it have two 6 pin power connectors on top of it?

yes and my psu only has 1.

You will need an adapter that will convert the one 6 pin PCI Express power connector to two 6 pin connectors. Or, alternatively, you'll need a molex to 6 pin power converter. That was why I asked if your video card included any adapters - most of them do (but I guess your card didn't).

In short, you've reached an impasse tonight. You can't go any farther until you can get the proper power to your video card.

It might be a better idea to swap that power supply for one that has the required plugs (or includes adapters). In addition to the main ATX connector, you need the 8 pin CPU power cable, plus two 6 pin power connectors (or the necessary adapters). Cooler Master isn't that great of a very good power supply brand, any way.

The supply you have will work, though, if you can get a power adapter to convert one of the existing cables to a 6 pin output.
