Gaming Box

I am going to build a new high-end gaming computer in the upcoming future.

Like everyone else, I'm going for bang:buck. I want to spend enough money to have a great system, but not go for "super high end".

After reading articles, I'm thinking about the following:
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E6400 OR E6600. The 6400 OC's so well, I don't really see why I would get anything 'better'.
MOBO: Asus P5W DH Deluxe
VIDEO: ASUS EAX1950PRO (??)
HSF: Noctua NH-U 12 or Thermaltake Ultra-120 (??)
RAM: 2Gigs of something?

4MB cache - same as X6800. An E6600 with the stock cooler can do 3.0GHz at default voltage. It's a no brainer. 🙂

Bang:Buck = console dude. =p

Paying $100 more for a 6600 is going to net him no noticeable performance gains in games. Might as well get a X1950XT instead or something with that money. Oh, and you don't need the Deluxe version unless you need the features.

How about a PSU? A Corsair HX620W would leave room for Quad-Crossfire (or whatever you call it 😛), so you might want that. If you don't plan on doing CF, then you could stick with something like a Masscool Nextherm 460W (newegg) or a Enhance ENP 460W (ewiz).

to save some moolah on a mobo you can consider the biostar 965 that just came out. awesome budget buy.

how much is it? Foxconn has a $100 965p board that is supposed to oc as well as the gigabyte dq6...

I'm about in the same box as you and going to build a budget gaming box.

Going with:

1.02g ASUS P5B-E
E6400 to OC to around 3.2
Artic Cooler Freezer Pro 7
2 GB Corsair XMS DDR2-800 the one w/ 4-4-4-12 or the GeIL Ultra
X1900XT 256mb
Antec P-180
Probably the Enermax Liberty 500w

around 1300 on Newegg.

crydee, you could up it to a Corsair HX520W if you wanted to support CF w/ that card. Or the Enhanc ENP 400W if you don't want to do CF.

Thanks for all of the replies!
At this point:
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E6600.
MOBO: Opinions?
VIDEO: ASUS EAX1950PRO // X1950XT ? How much better is XT? Pricing?
HSF: Noctua NH-U 12 or Thermaltake Ultra-120 // Opinions?
RAM: What RAM?

I want a gaming computer, and I want to overclock the hell out of it.

I've seen the 6400's getting up to the 3.5GHz range, so I want a heatsink and mobo that will allow the 6600 to do the same.

the very fact that he does not explain his decision makes him an unreliable source, and his post... useless, save perhaps the link. BOTH heatsinks are good, the ultra is a bit better but both are a bit overprices for me at least. Like $50 shipped each. I would go with the scythe mine for $35 @ newegg shipped. It is easily in the top 5 for hsf's and maybe in the top 3. The freezer 7 pro is also VG, the best budget cooler out there. For $21 shipped, it is awesome.

EDIT: Read up on some heatsink reviews and comparisons @ silent pc review, madshrimps, andoverclockers.com for reliable opinions/stats.
