Just had a baby (~4months ago) I want to continue play at night when my wife and daughter are asleep. I am looking to get new speakers, a headset and possibly a new sound card. The headset and speakers are a must. What would you all recommend? The speakers are for just general computing (nothing high end). The headset will be for gaming so I want it to be better than average. I only want to spend about $100-150 total.

First of all - headphones suck. You are going to be forking out the cash for a decent set of headphones that sound OK.

You can get an Audigy 2 from newegg for pretty cheap (like 40-60 bucks.)

Just get a nice 2.1 set like the Klipsch 2.1.

Or for like 50 bucks less get the Klipsch 2.0 (id spend the extra 50 bucks and get the 2.1's though.)
 
Don't quote me on this but my friend told me the new Creative Labs X-Fi or whatever they are called new sound card actually makes non surround sound headphones surround sound... dunno if this is true or not...

Yeah, Klipsch 2.1s will do him well when his wife and daughter are sleeping. Read much?

Sennheiser headphones are a good quality brand but can get a little pricey. Your money will be best spent getting the highest end set of headphones possible (*edit* within your budget) while leaving just a little $$ for the desktop speakers.
 
i'm in sort of the same situation. my daughter's are 1 and 3 now, but i still bother them and my wife with my speakers when i'm gaming. i'm like 98% sold on the turtle beach earforce headphones, they have multiple speakers to simulate 5.1. i've read good reviews and a few bad ones, but the good outweigh the bad and i know a guy who has a set and loves them (well he did when i last spoke with him). i have a nice set of cans now, but for gaming they just aren't good. you can't really tell where sounds are coming from. i do a lot of fps gaming so i'd like something a little more spacial.

edit:

for speakers i have a set of these. they are more than capable of producing music at much louder levels than i thought. i had some klipsch 2.1s and if i come across some extra money i might very well buy another set, but honestly these work great for me. i'm not 18 anymore, i can't blast music in the house. even the bass sounds good for what would seem like a low end set of speakers.

get a pair of grado sr60's off ebay, the best bang for the buck headphone of its type. you can couple them with a audigy of some kind and be good to go. and no, headphones absolutely do not suck.

yeah i've heard that. i only wear my glasses about once a month so i'm not worried about that.

I hadn't seen the turtle beach yet but they look like something that might be worth while. I would love to get the klipsch but they would just be wasted. The x-230's I had looked at and they seemes good for the money. I will have to do some research on the headset.

Agreed, I have a pair of those and they sound out of this world. Best headphones for the money. Although, he might look into a set of SEALED cans since he doesn't want to bother his family. These headphones have leakage since they are OPEN cans. That or some plantronics would be good since they come with mic too.

You won't even need a new sound card since this bypasses it and has it's own DSP sound card. It also fits in the USB port. DIGITAL HEADPHONES.

I prefer the larger ones though...

They are only $5x so you still have money to get a decent set of 2.1 speakers. Enjoy!
 
How can play games with with X300SE 128 MB PCIe? I'd look to upgrade that first and buy a cheap $25 Envy 24 chipset sound card with headphones.

I can get by. That is a whole other discussion. I will probably be upgrading that within 2 months just waiting to save the money (see reference to new baby above).

hence, his need for headphones, "headphones suck" are just an opinion for audiophiles, but cmon, this guys a dad, he wants to game with sound AND keep his daughter and wife asleep 🙂
 
X-Fi sound card is very good for playing games with headphones.

I started one of these to see if it isworth getting 5.1 headphones and most people seem to think stereo headphones with CMSS-3D create better surround then 5.1 headphones.

Depending what games you are playing you may consider getting a vibrating headset as well. I thought it was gimmicky until I played BF2 at friend's PC last Sunday.

But defenitely get X-Fi

Edit: There are 4 different X-Fi cards. What is called X-Fi Xtreme Music has almost all the features of upper models including CMSS headphones and you can get it for $120. Higher version is called X-Fi Platinum and comes with a front bay for 1/4" inputs, but is 10-20 bucks above your budget.
