Gaming @1920x1200 resolution. What kind of proc and video card would a system need?

I was just browsing by ncix.com, anyway looking over 24inch lcds and these three caught my eye:

Acer AL2416WD 24IN Wide Screen LCD Silver 1920X1200 1000:1 6MS 0.27MM VGA DVI-D Monitor

Samsung SyncMaster 244T 24IN LCD Black 6MS 1920X1200 1000:1 0.27MM VGA DVI Component Monitor

Samsung SyncMaster 244T 24IN LCD Silver 6MS 1920X1200 1000:1 0.27MM VGA DVI Component Monitor

Now I was just wondering if anyone has bought any of these on the forums, and how are they for gaming? Id love to try games like quake4 and crysis at 1920x1200 :p but I doubt they'd even support these resolutions....What kind of dual video cards would be powerful enough and what processor could support gaming at these res's?

Thanks

Even if Crysis does support 1920x1200 there is no single/dual g-card solution that would be playable with eye candy at that res...

Wait for DX10 cards to hit the market.

First, many games support widescreen, especially new ones. It is rare that one doesn't, such as Battlefield 2.

Second, 1920x1200 isn't as extreme as you seem to have the impression it is. Some people play games at 2560x1600!

I run my 2405FPW on a single X1800XT 512MB. It could be better in Oblivion, yes, but it is flawless in say, Half Life 2.

A dual 7900 GT setup in SLI would run many games very well at 1900x1200.

I'm still running a AGP equipped PC. With my 7800GS I can run World of Warcraft smoothly at 1900x1200, but more techinically advanced games like F.E.A.R., Call of Duty 2, etc. require my to scale back substantially. Luckily the Dell 2405 actually looks really good at lower resolutions, but it would be nice to run more titles at 1900x1200.

get a 7900GTX SLi or quad SLi(7900GX 2), these will be enough to play at max settings for most games atleast,
don't buy a 1900xtx toxic or 7900gtx extreme if you want to game at that res
7950GX 2 is more like the min

Make sure you get 512mb of ram on your graphics card, 2 7900 GT's in sli is only considered 256, because neither card has access to all 512. The reason for 512 is the frame buffer at 1920x1080 may be too much for a 256 mb card. My suggestion is get a 7950GX2 or 7900GTX or X1900XTX for 1920x1080, and then if you feel you need snappier, get a second 7900GTX/X1900XTX (as long as you have SLI/Crossfire board for whichever card you choose). The 7950 GX2 is likely going to be enough on its own though, and isnt SLI capible yet anyways.

I can play all games at 1920x1200 with everything maxed (HQAF, AA, texture, etc) - except for oblivion, which I only use HDR (and no AA)

get intel conroe for the OP

Actually, at such a high res., such a fast CPU wouldn't really be nesassary (sp?). You could probably use a 2.4ghz X2 and see hardly any difference (although the conroe might be able to do the SLI calculations a tad faster, although the FSB might restrict it comparded to AMD's HT...)

On most games, a single X1900XT(X) might be enough. You might have to turn down some of the settings though. And yes, the thing you want is 512mb of vram especally with the new games coming out using more of it.

I forgot what site did this (link anyone?) but they compared RAM usage to VRAM usage at diff. Reses. Was it Hard OCP?

You using that old Geforce 2 MX for that!??!?!? (was looking to see what your current rig was and only found that one)

I just got myself one of those Sony 24" widescreen CRT monitors. I'm running 1920x1200 for Guild Wars with my vanilla x800 without a problem - thankfully it doesn't require that much power.

I'm haven't tried Quake 4 yet, I have a feeling that's gonna be a bit more brutal. But since I have a CRT I can always use a lower rez :D

I am using A64 3200, 1 gig ram and 6800gt. Played most games at 19x12 w/o problems w/ my 2405fpw, but then again i play regular games, NFS MW, WoW, BoME II, SW: BF2, HL2, and Far Cry.

sorry about that last one. I am running the Acer 2416w. Its very nice. perfect for gaming. i run oblivion and fear well, though fear doesnt do wide screen (anybody know a trick for that?). I also found Call of duty 2 runs really well all of these with pretty maxed out goodies.

One x1900 is perfect for that resolution, the only reason i have crossfire is because i like to run FEAR with AA and battlefield 2 with Adaptive AA, but if you aren't an IQ nazi, one is fine.

It used to be that 1024x768 and then 1600x1200 was the normal resolution most games run well at, but the advances of GPUs are keeping up with software enough that 1920x1200 is a perfectly feasible resolution.

And what, LCD's can't change resolutions?

Not without sacrificing image quality due to running at a non-native resolution.

I recently upgraded to the Acer AL2416W and am very pleased with it - fast response, no dead pixels, DVI capability and the price was right ($899 CAN at Costco).

All games were very playable on a 7900 GTX but I ended up adding a second to have the SLI setup. This made a huge difference in smoothing out gameplay, especially in games like FEAR and Oblivion. I would imagine you could get close to this performance with a single 7950GX2.

In terms of setting up games for widescreen, I got most of the tips from the Widescreen Gaming Forum:
