Gamestop: Trade in old xbox 360 towards new slim 360

Got it. Traded a few more odds and ends to make it $55 out the door, including tax.

People were calling while I was there to find out if they could get one. The story is that they only received enough to fulfill backorders, and they're not taking any more backorders at this time. Looks like this was a very limited initial run by Microsoft.

FYI - I wasn't on the pre-order list so I just called my local Gamestop every day and asked if they had them in stock. I called today and was blown away by the answer. Yeh, we have a few in stock, come on down in the next half hour with your trade machine and we can do the deal....It cost me 200 net, I used my Amex card to double the warranty and my son is happliy playing with his new xbox. Man it is slick; quiet, well designed and man am I happy that I got 100 beaners for his the clunky old loud xbox that rrod'd twice and I had fixed twice under warranty because it was such a toaster oven.

Just keep calling!
Good Luck!

Pretty happy with mine. This is the way the 360 should have been built from the beginning. It is so much lighter and quieter than the original. It also has it's own dedicated digital optical port which is useful for me since I have a non-HDMI receiver and a TV which supports HDMI. The older 360 has the optical port integrated with the component cable/adapter instead.

Got mine last week. Very pleased with the design on the new 360. Soooooooo much quieter than my original launch 360. Very much worth the $100 it cost me after the trade in credits.

Called a few stores in Westchester, NY today (they were showing up as in stock on gamestop's website) and they did have them in the morning but had sold out of them -- so it looks like they are catching up to the initial demand.

If you haven't gotten in on this deal but still want to, I'd strongly suggest giving your local gamestop a call to see if they have them in stock.

I got mine yesterday with the tradein. They had it in stock all weekend but I couldn't make it till last night to pick it up. When I got there the guy said they were being nagged all weekend because it was showing up in stock, but they weren't able to sell it because it was on reserve. LOL.

Looks much nicer, but I am still disappointed with the fan noise level. It is not completely quiet like the PS3, but at least the fan doesn't sound as annoying as the old model.

All in all, $160 is not a bad deal to get a new console that is under warranty, has more geebee's, the wifi's, HDMI, a fresh controller, a replacement headset for my old/broken/greasy one, and a system that matches my home theater gear.

I just got home from their store after doing the trade in. $147.99 out the door after a 20 gig hdd/network adapter/console swap. Not great but not terrible either.

We play some Rockband but mainly use the 360 to stream movies and music from the PC. No more loud console! w00t!

Thanks to the OP though. Wasn't aware of this deal, I just came in here Monday looking for a deal on a Harmony 880 because mine is going tango uniform.

Bah! I'll be yanked if it isn't significantly more quiet.

*goes to hook dis bitch up*

Just hooked mine up, and I'm doing the transfer now. Unfortunately, I couldn't find my old composite cables so I had to trade in my component cables from the old Xbox -- I assumed the new one would come with something more substantial than composite cables...I was wrong.

Does anyone know if the old cables work on the new slim or if you need to buy a new one? And before you ask, the TV I have it hooked up to only has one HDMI input and that's already hooked up to my cable box...I suppose I could switch them, but then I'd need to find my transfer cable for my harmony remote to swap them...

Why not get an HDMI switch?

I was thinking the same thing, but he certainly won't be able to control the switch with his Harmony (which can be reprogrammed with any mini-USB cable, by the way).

HarvardAce, PM me if you're interested in buying the VGA breakout cable. It will do 1080p, so it's actually even better than component. Perhaps you have a free VGA input on your TV. I bought it for use with my old xbox, but don't need it now that I have an HDMI xbox. Here's what it looks like: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360vgahdcable/

Are we talking about the same xbox here? I got the $99 arcade from wally world, and it's quieter than the PS/3. Also has a 135 watt power brick, where presumably it's supposed to have a 150.

Yeah, being able to do it all with the Harmony is a requirement as my wife also uses the TV. However, thanks for the note that I can use any mini-USB cable -- I don't have any but found one on ebay for $1.50 shipped, so I should have it in a day or two. Then I'll be able to use the HDMI on the xbox and component for the cable box.

As for the offer for the VGA cables, I appreciate it, but the TV only has 1 HDMI, 2 component, and 3 composite/svideo inputs. It's an older (~6 years?) 52" Toshiba DLP. Will probably upgrade to a 1080P at some point in the future, but it would also mean swapping out the stand as the current stand is specially designed to fit the contours of the TV.

And to stay mildly on-topic, my old 360 was extremely noisy. The new one isn't whisper quiet but it's no worse than my cable box when it's going. The one thing that I did notice, however, is that the hard drive is considerably louder (as I can now hear it churning when it's being accessed). Then again, it just might be that the hard drive on the old one was drowned out by the xbox itself.

Looks like you're all set. Glad I could help. I'm impressed that your older TV has HDMI...must have been cutting edge at the time!

On the issue of heat/noise, the new xbox is definitely quieter, but not as quiet as my PS3. And while it idles much, much lower than my old xbox and my PS3 (at 69 watts, amazingly), it produces a surprising amount of heat, far more than my PS3. I don't really get it...how can something so low-power be so incredibly inefficient? It's as if the xbox takes 5 watts to run and 65 watts to power its blow-dryer function!

Uh, depending on the hdmi switch you get, the harmony might be able to control it. My Monoprice 5-1 works fine with harmony 676. Just fyi ...

The damn thing is a volcano! 45 minutes of Rockband and it was ready to dry an old lady's perm.

Hot deal indeed.
