Gamespot slams Alpha Protocol

I'm still hoping hope for it, and even still I'll pick it up when it goes on sale on Steam probably. It just looks interesting to me.

Bit-tech also posted a scathing review... 5/10 if I remember right.

And I agree with the reviews... the game is downright terrible.

I stopped taking them seriously when they accepted bribes to review Doom 3 favorably and fired people who didnt play ball.

And besides which, knowing what I do about games these days, I'd rather take something that was insanely fun but had issues, over a game that was super pretty and not fun. Crysis had this problem.

I kind of still want to try it, sheerly out of boredom. The negative reviews are pretty scathing though. Not worth the risk.

Chris Avellone made a bad game? What is the world coming to?

Did the publishers force them to release it long before it was ready, like with KOTOR 2?

Most games that try to combine two play styles fail miserably. To do two types of game play in one game and do it well takes a lot of time. Most publishers aren't willing to let their developers spend more than 2 years on a game anymore, so all of the good games are fairly shallow, while the games that try to add depth usually end up messing up the basics. Ever since this generation of consoles came out it's been a rush to get out whatever game you can just to make a buck off of it. If the game fails, fuck it and move on to the next one. Support after the sale is slowly fading away. The only thing the publishers are interested in is making more money, so they push the developers to make more map packs instead of fix the issues with the games.

That being said, I am not at all surprised to see this game getting bad reviews. Perhaps if it had a longer development time it could have been the game that people wanted it to be, but the publishers don't really give a shit about what people think anymore. As long as a couple hundred thousand people make the mistake of buying their game, they'll make their money's worth.

The hacking in this game is fucking bullshit. Especially the bombs in the museum level. Oh, and the mouse look is fucked-up too, it randomly repositions the camera while walking around and I end up looking at a floor tile while 5 bad guys shoot the shit out of me. I regret buying it.

OK, do I have hope in this game shaping up? Can the problems with it be fixed via patches or is this thing lack finished content (KOTOR 2) and/or beyond hope of gameplay salvation?

I don't know Schadenfroh, but the question to ask is does Obsidian thinks it needs fixing, and will they release patches? I read a rumor over on destructoid that alleges the director in charge of the game said there's nothing wrong with it, basically.

I was playing this game until I got frustrated that it freezes for 5 seconds when you try to buy anything. Patch it, and then I'll give it a go. At the moment, it's pretty unplayable.

erratic mouse/camera movements can be fixed by modifying the APEngine.ini file:

FIX FOR SHUTTERING from OBSIDIAN FORUM:
in APEngine.ini ( C:\Users\<yourname>\Documents\Alpha Protocol\APGame\Config)
change this values to this:
UseBackgroundLevelStreaming=false
OnlyStreamInTextures=true
OneFrameThreadLag=False

Once I modified those values - camera/mouse stuttering disappeared. 🙂

The game takes a bit to get use to - reminds me of playing STALKER for the first few hours - sub par graphics, clunky combat, etc. I'd suggest running the training areas a few times until you get a good feel for how combat, stealth, hacking work before taking on your first mission.

I get the feeling they wanted to make a "Splinter Cell Conviction/24" [the show] type of game with RPG elements [stealth, weapon skills, toughness, melee combat, etc]. I chose to start out as a stealthy character - and once I purchased a "stealth suit" + increased my stealthiness [where they always show up on the "radar"] - I can easily sneak up on most enemies and crack their skulls... or put a bullet in their head with my silencer equipped pistol. 🙂

Conversation is very similar to the "bioware" rpg choices - depending upon your choice will determine who "loves", likes, dislikes, or outright hates you.

Computer Hacking - it's clunky -but again, once you get use to it - it becomes tolerable. If you don't like it - you can always carry around and use EMP devices. 🙂

Eh... it's a clunky game..but like STALKER... it grows on you after you've finished a few missions.
