CBS Corporation just announced an agreement to buy CNET for $1.8 billion dollars. Through the deal, all of CNET's network sites, including GameSpot, TV.com mp3.com, CNET news.com, UrbanBaby, CHOW, Search.com, BNET, MySimon and TechRepublic all become property of CBS.

CBS' existing online network already includes CBS.com, CBSSports.com, CBSCollegeSports.com, MaxPreps.com, CBSNews.com, last.fm, Wallstrip, MobLogic, and the CBS Radio and CBS Television Stations digital media
platforms. CBS says its distribution net, the Audience Network, comprises 300 partner sites and reaches 82% of U.S. web users.

"CNET Networks operates some of the most important premium online brands, serving the most sought after online audiences," said CNET CEO Neil Ashe. "Today's announcement brings together two organizations that complement each other and working with Leslie, Quincy and the talented people at CBS, we look forward to taking our business and our brands to the next level."

From Wikipedia:
Jeff Gerstmann, Editorial Director of the site, was fired on November 28, 2007. Immediately after his termination, rumors circulated proclaiming his dismissal was a result of external pressure from Eidos Interactive, the publisher of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men which Gerstmann had previously given a Fair or undesirable rating along with critique. Both Gamespot and parent company CNET stated that his dismissal was unrelated to the review. A month after Gerstmann's termination, reviewer Frank Provo left GameSpot after eight years stating that "I believe CNET management let Jeff go for all the wrong reasons. I believe CNET intends to soften the site's tone and push for higher scores to make advertisers happy."

There are a number of sites out there that do better reporting and reviews than GS. I don't even go to that place for gaming info anymore. Arstechnica has Megan Webb doing daily tech news web cast!

I quit going to Gamespot years ago, and it used to be my #1 source for gaming stuff. I always hated Jeff Gerstmann (he's a self-righteous prick), but with the whole Kayne & Lynch ordeal, followed by half the staff walking out the door in the following weeks (they lost another last week), and the recently them getting caught changing the score of their GTA4 review to match competitors, I just don't want anything to do with them anymore.

You can't trust them. It'll take years to restore their image as far as I'm concerned.

So in that case, which is the least tainted of the fairly large gaming review websites? 1up?

Personally, I still trust IGN's reviews, but I never really care about the score anyway. I typically use the score only as a indicator as to whether or not to waste my time to read the text. And with text, I can typically get an idea of what's going on with the game, and I'll know if it's something I'd be interested in.

I pretty much don't trust any reviews anymore.. They seem so inconsistent. I still get EGM and GI mags sent to the house, but I don't put alot of stock into the reviews past glancing at the overall score and maybe reading the "cliffs". As far as getting a fair review on a "Blockbuster" game, forget about it.

As scary as it sounds, I put the most stock in the review info from this forum.. Pretty much every time a game comes out, we have an "official" thread on it where everyone weighs in with their opinion. I think we have a group of "regualrs" established enough, you get to know everyones likes, dislikes, biases, etc, you can actually get a pretty good idea if the game is going to be good for you, or going to be shit.

Take for example, GTA4.. Read reviews anywhere, they are like 10 10 10 !! But as you skim through the "Official Thread" you will see there are more than a few people not happy with it, and posted very valid reasons. Because of that, I actually went into the game expecting a 7.5-8 game, instead of a 10 and I wasn't disappointed.

It also caused me to look at (what turned out to be) great games like Bully and Burnout Paradise. And also helped build well deserved excitement of true "10" games like Mass Effect, and Bioshock as they got almost no negative posts ( and that is saying something from you cynical bastards :p )

yep. Even with all the bad scores for LAIR, I read everything major review, and decided I should buy it. I wasn't disappointed at all. Controls and the game itself is difficult, just because of the idea of no radar and a rudimentary goal-direction system, but I like that. Having a radar when on a dragon wouldn't completely disconnect me from the game and story. To me, the entire presentation really works, and the difficulty, while difficult, is actually great. I didn't really have too much issue as far as artificial difficulty due to controls though, even though the controls are a little difficult. Never beat the game though, have picked it up a few times... that's not the game though, that's me. I don't beat games, rarely do I ever beat a game. Time-extended ADD me thinks. lol That's my life in a nutshell. I pick up and drop hobbies quite often. Even the best games, I lose the desire to pick up again after not playing for awhile, and that just continues until its been months, and all of a sudden I might, or might not, have a desire to play. Completely unpredictable.
Regardless, I need to pick it up again now that analog control was added. Decide if it really makes it better/easier, of it the game is just naturally hard regardless of control scheme.

Wow, you just perfectly described me :). I get bored with stuff very easily, not only with games, but in other hobbies as well. I have a few different hobbies that I like to take on, but only one at a time. I'll usually do something for a couple of months, get bored, go on to the next, then the cycle continues. Web design to photography to woodworking to videogames to whatever. It's just a big circle :).
