Gamespot boycott

IF this is full story, this is ridiculous...thats not why someone should get fired...its a game review, not a promotion...i count on reviews to pick my games up.....

i wonder...did he know he was leaving prior to the review......???? more facts, anyone have them?

Absolutely nothing on that site is confirmed. They have stated rumor like it is fact. I hated Jeff Gerstmann and rarely visit Gamespot, but none of that is confirmed fact.

Yeah there's definitely nothing but speculation surrounding this whole mess. GS is a HUGE review site, who is more than able to get other money if Eidos did indeed pull future money. So GS firing somebody over ad money seems incredibly unlikely.

this guy was known as a low scoring reviewer i believe, even if there any truth in it, I doubt this single eidos incident was the cause of his firing, probably many many other reasons as well.

It would make sense, with added pressure from Sony over his 7.5 scoring of R&C, but, as others said, it is all just rumors.

who cares.
people get worked up over the smallest thing.
don't like gamespot ? read other reviews.
hell you should read more than one review in any case.
i for one will keep using GS simply becasue its the best orgranised site and their video reviews are awesome.

Yeah, GS sucks in the first place so never bothered to visit the site. So sure, I'll join the boycott.

I think that, if it is true, it could have some effect on the video game media industry as a whole.

Q: Was Eidos Interactive upset by the game's review?

A: It has been confirmed that Eidos representatives expressed their displeasure to their appropriate contacts at GameSpot, but not to editorial directly. It was not the first time a publisher has voiced disappointment with a game review, and it won't be the last. However, it is strict GameSpot policy never to let any such feelings result in a review score to be altered or a video review to be pulled.

Q: Did Eidos' disappointment cause Jeff to be terminated?

A: Absolutely not.

Q: Did Eidos' disappointment cause the alteration of the review text?

A: Absolutely not.

Q: Did Eidos' disappointment lead to the video review being pulled down?

A: Absolutely not.

I think this week's episode of the Gamespot's The Hotspot really made it personal for me. I mean even though a lot of people hate Gamespot for doing this, there are people that just lost a friend in the company and that they too are affected. I think that there were many reasons for his firing. I mean he's a great guy. I enjoyed his times on the Hotspot and he will be missed, but I think we should get all the facts before we start going to the extreme.

yeah well it is technically a rumor but check out all the facts and see what the most likely conclusion is.

I know. Seriously what do some people expect, that they are going to admit to it? That's never going to happen. He's been there since 1996, if they didn't like the way he did things they should have fired him 10 years ago. It doesn't take Captain Obvious to figure this one out.

These two are what is TRULY damning. Not that they fired some tool.

I like how this website is brand new, and has a banner ad at the bottom.

I do not believe that this news is a big deal like many are making it out to be. Reviews will forever deliver the same product to me. That is, they are a wad of trash that I read in order to discover some facts about a game that are important to me by filtering the misleading opinions. So whether or not Gamespot's reviews are worthless due to the pressure from advertisers makes no difference to me since I will be ignoring all opinions anyways.

Same here. The only reviews that I even take into consideration are that of other gamers with similar interests in games. Most reviews I don't even agree with anyways after playing the games.

I listened to the HotSpot podcast today, and hearing how the GameSpot staffers were just as upset over everything as the public was makes me feel better about the situation, and also makes me realize what huge pricks CNet are for handling it the way they did.

What does this mean exactly in today's terms? Is it just me or is it rare to find a game given a 5/10. There are plenty of crappy games out there but it seems like they always end up with 6 or 7 and to me anything above a 5/6 is considered above average.

The whole damn rating system needs to be looked at by almost everyone who reviews video games imho.
