Are there any games that don't say they work with linux but actually do? Could I play my Call of Duty on Linux?

Games only work on linux if they were "ported," that is a linux-specific version was written.

Think of your question this way: "Are there any games that don't say they work with macs but actually do?"

Not totally true, a lot of games play well in Cedega (WINE).

In other words, no, games don't work with Linux. Use of a 3rd party app isn't what he was asking.

A game design for Windows won't work with any other OS, and the same goes the other way. Games designed for MacOS or Linux won't work in Windows.

Sure they work. Do they work by themselves? Probably not. Do they all work flawlessly? Of course not. Can you play them? Possibly.

He didn't specify that the support had to be native.

The way he worded it implied that is what he meant.

Interesting, the Windows emulation has improved a lot since I looked at it a year or two ago :)

Cedega review
-- though from the review you'd still be better off dual-booting Windows to play the games instead of through the emulation layer.

It depends a lot on the game, some work better than others and some don't work at all. I know people who were playing WoW in cedega and getting better FPS than they did in Windows.

I don't rate OSNews articles very highly...

Wolfenstien ET, UT2004, America's Army, Neverwinter Nights, Quake 3, Doom 3 are all native.

But with Cedega, I have been able to play Half life 2, CS 1.6, CS source, Jedi Knight 2, jedi academy, far cry (somewhat), Moo2, starcraft, BG (1 and 2), and others.

So there is linux gaming, and its growing. But right now its spotty.
