I can play the original counterstrike and team fortress classic but I want to play new games.

Any ideas of fun games that will run on my laptop?
Would HL2 run on my laptop and any of its mods?

Doom 3 supposedly runs on anything. Could be a good way to test that theory. I have no clue about HL2.

Battlefield 1942 with Desert Combat Final would run on your computer. Probably the best thing I can think of.

Though I'm saying you go old-school. Wander over to fileplanet and get the full version of Tribes, install Presto Pack and Writer's Scripts, and have a blast.

No no no.

First, it's HL2 that runs on anything, Doom3 can't even be run on highest settings on the best systems out today.

Battlefield 1942 was slow on my Dell Desktop and it was more powerful than his laptop by quite a bit, so I would not suggest it either.

Frankly, there are a couple issues here.

A. 256mb RAM. That's just not enough for new games. Some are starting to recommend 1gb of RAM, some with minimum of twice what you have.

B. Radeon 9000 32mb. Most new games require at least a 64mb video card. HL2 says nothing about this, but I'm willing to bet it'll run like crap on your system anyway.

C. You are on a laptop. They are usually not designed with gaming performance in mind, especially yours. On top of probably a slow proc, low amount of RAM, and cheap video card(some onboard is faster), you also probably have a slow harddrive too. Overall, it's not a gaming machine at all.

I grabbed 3 boxes of new games and looked at the requirements. One actually isn't released to the public till the spring, but I have a box handy anyway :p Well, you can't play any of them.

You could attempt HL2... but don't cry if it doesn't work. You were warned.

Of course, there are LOTS of classic games that will run perfectly fine that are still excellent.

Counter Strike, original HL, Playstation emulator/MAME, Quake III Arena. I could sit for hours with CS and an emulator.

edit: UT2004 will probably run on it too

Sorry but the latest games are not playable . . . .try the original Unreal, NOLF (maybe Nolf II) Max Payne . . . . Quake III games . . . . my old PIII 866M with a 32MB DDR ATI Mobility Radeon and 384MB RAM could handle those games . . . . not much more.

I second the emulator idea. I can spend hours playing Earthbound Zero and Startropics, for starters. Not to mention Super Nintendo games. Hell, I bet your system is robust enough to handle a Playstation Emulator; (and Dreamcast) bring your PSX games with you, along with a Kiky-X Series and a good controller and you'll be set.

On top of that, I recommend Gunbound and Soldat. Both are ludicrously addictive little online games.

600 MHz is far below the minimum spec for most games made in the last 2 years or so. Stick to older 2002 titles or earlier.

I have a 600m with an ATI Radeon 9000 64MB and 1GB of RAM (1.4GHz)

I can play Call of Duty without any problems. Sims2 runs ok in medium-low settings. Doom 3 runs and looks good, but crashes after 5-10 minutes. I believe it's a heat related issue though.

256MB isn't enough for most modern games. Try and bump that up if possible. The 32MB Radeon won't play any new games with advanced 3d engines very well.

so don't give up! It's not a horrible gaming laptop, but there is a range of games that are barely playable.
