System Shock 2
That game where you were the man in a black coat and had to kill zombies. It had really good lighting/visual effects.

1) Half-Life in the dead of night, the first time I played it.
2) Max Payne. See above post regarding trippy LSD missions.
3) Amercian McGee's Alice. Holy crap.

forgot about Half-life. Specifically that time you're on that rock ledge and somewhere along there one of those little alien things jump out at you. That was the first time I threw my mouse across my desk and literally jumped off my chair.

The first headcrab shriek got me. I had the speakers cranked. And then later on in Xen when the giant Mother Headcrab comes stomping out ... it wasn't as much fright as "Oh sweet unholy crap. That thing's going to FU(K me up." I play all my games on the most difficult setting - so yes, it did royally ream me several times.

like caramel with a strapon? 😛

No, that was HotChic. :Q Don't let that "innocent girl" thing fool you!

Oops, i knew it was one of the chicks... (obviously 😛)

damn, i wasnt much of a gamer before doom, and when that came out, and i walked through the halls, i always dreaded meeting that pink monster... the one that looks like... a huge head on a pair of chicken legs... you all rememvber those? the minotaurs or whatever they were? those things were creepy for me... then i got used to it, and graduated to duke nukem 3d, and strippers 😉

HOLY S@$()% THAT SOUNDS CREEPY :Q:Q😛

Pssh. Exaggeration. The Demons looked more like shaved dog/minotaur crossbreeds. 😛 /me heads off to find pics

Yep. those damned things scared the bejeezus outta me...

Had finally convinced my friend to allow me to take his 10 or so diskettes with Doom to install on my new Pentium 100mhz, with my brand spanking 8bit soundcard, installed and played the keys off the keyboard with it, while wearing earphones at 2am. Not a good idea when all you can hear are those damned zombies and Imps breathing in the next room....

...And then there were the Revenants. I think I lost at least two years off my lifespan that night getting the bejesus scared outta me.

Undying was quite freaky...just the introduction was enough to scare me off.

Also, System Shock 2 caught me outta the blue with the ghosts at the vending machines...

Slient Hill, when i was like 11 and got they game i was so fvcking scared. i couldnt even play with the lights on.

Agreed. It's not like jump outta your seats scary like Resident Evil. Even for Silent Hill's graphics, the mood and setting was just so disturbing that it stayed with you even after you stop playing it. That freaky radio noise always bothered me, and then I shine a light on those faceless little guys carrying knives. Scary and freaky shiet!

I got my friend to play silent hill at his place at 12am... Right when you get attacked for the very first time by those little Child Zombies with knives he threw his playstation controller at the tv and broke the controller. He freaked out big time.

Actually, the music from the Ice World (World 6) of Mario Bros. 3 used to scare me when I played that game and I was home alone. Creepy music...

system shock 2 is available on underdogs. i downloaded and checked it out.

i didn't play much, didn't even seen an enemy but i had a nightmare about it! it was a scary nightmare. I used the wrench you get in the beginning too.

i guess i got creeped out just by its reputation.

i just thought of something. the maniacal screams and laughter from the original diablo were fvcking awesome. that game was so great!

System Shock 2 that scarry huh?

I bought it for like $8 a while ago but never got into it

I guess I know what game I will be playing during the summer 🙂

Id have to say the Max Payne levels when he's on LSD and the other hallway/blood trail thing...I hated playing those, partly because they were eerily quiet. Im not too much into FPS so Ive never played Half-Life (I tried once, but it didnt work on my system I think)

AvP.

Man that game freaked the crap outta me (years ago when I was new to gaming)! Nothing scarier than playing late at night with the lights off and speakers cranked as marines with your motion sensor pinging like mad and the aliens closing in fast...

1. Undying
2. Half-Life
3. Aliens vs Predator - as the Marine - nothing like the motion detector pinging like mad.
4. Doom 2 (I played it before Doom 1)
5. Thief - I hate zombies...

The 7th Guest and 11th Hours messed with me something awful. Thinking about the little children screaming in the nursery bothers me to this day.

not to mention half a case of mountin dew :frown:

Yeah that and Resident Evil on psx.

First Resident Evil had one jump moment in the game. I was going to the right of the main hall at the start and I walk along. Then BAM these friggin dogs jump out of the window and I shat myself. I was suprised a game could do that to me. First time it ever happened to me.......Rest of the game didn't jump me though. Dam WHY didn't I complete that game! I was SOOOO close but gave it back to my friend in the end.......

Resisdent Evil was chilling to play. Dark settings, music the atmosphere. Great game. Had a few jumpy moments in the game. Things jumping from the ceiling everything.

I don't jump at all in the movies but at home on the games I've jumped on the 2 games. The only reason I see is that in the movies I am spectator and here in the games I am interactive as I control the person on screen.......

doom3 alpha 😛

Amen...I saw that at the last LAN I was at. The corpse being dragged around the corner in the flickering light drove me insane.

strangely a couple of friends and I were discussing this exact same topic last night. One idea I had to make a came creepy was peripheral illusions scripted into the levels. As an object leaves your field of view, it would change inot something else, or a statues eyes might seem to folow you. But only for a second, and only once, so you could never duplicate it and verify that you really saw what you thought you saw.

Good/bad sound effects seem to have a huge impact on how creepy a game is. The heartbeat pulse in AvP2 combined with the sounds of straining metal create incredible tension. Natural selection is another good one. I can remember the first time I played it, crouching behind a box in a dimly lit hall, low on helath and ammo, and hearing the wet footsteps of an approaching alien whom I knew was looking for me.

The first game that creeped the hell out of me was an "Aliens" conversion for Doom. Damn that was intense.

Next was AvP. I couldn't play as the marine. Too intense 🙂

Exactly what I was going to say.

(I was 10 when I saw "Alien" and it's been the creature of my nightmares ever since)

I can play the alien in AvP and AvP2 and kick ass and feel great. I can even play the predator against aliens without freaking too much. When I'm the marine, though, I just sh!t my pants constantly. It gets to the point where I'm just too afraid to turn that next corner and I have to exit.

I remember one instance, playing the marine, when I'm standing in a hallway, there's an alien coming towards me on the motion detector that I can't see and then realization comes to me... I look up... :Q

System Shock 2
Alone in the Dark
The Thing
Unreal (right near the beginning when you walk down the hallway and the lights start to go out, and then...)
