Games that don't benefit from 2 gigs of ram

I have some computer games that I'm 90% sure don't use more than 1 gig of ram.

If I get 2 gigs of ram, will these games run faster?

probably not, huh, but just checking anyway.

Faster as in framerates? Probably not.
Faster as in load times? Maybe. You would actually have time them, upgrade, then see if theres a difference.

I could not tell any difference in Baldur's Gate when I upgraded to 2gb of ram a while back;)

Seriously, list the games in question....

Battlefield 2 - definite improvement.
CS:S and most HL2 mods, not really.

It's not just the games, but everything else you're running. I run BOINC 24/7, except for some games I have to shut BOINC down as it pushes my 1 gb past the limit. If I don't shutdown BOINC, that usually means minutes of waiting after exiting a game as the swap file gets reconfigured and the ram reloads/unloads.

I think I will need to add another ram because Civ4 crash down to desktop when I build a huge empire while IE7 up running at same time.

By the way, have you ever got it to run in one of the higher resolutions?
I can only get a max of 1024x768 and thats it. Anything higher and the game crashes whenever I right click on an item.
I recently got a big CRT that can run 2048x1536 and the game looks great provided I dont actually try to do anything besides scroll around.

Yeah, BF2 / 2142 are MASSIVE memory hogs. So too is Supreme Commander, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Oblivion.

More memory is a good thing. Swap is bad.

I need (Desperately) 3 GB, so that I can run Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premiere all at once. That's just NOT possible with 1GB as I currently have.

But that's media production, and not gaming.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just close IE7?

Civ4 can even top the 2 gig mark on the highest game settings and in massive 18 player games.

It worked on my old nvidia video card at 1600x1200 (my monitor's native resolution), but it was so tiny that I could not see my bhaal spawn:evil:

Custom game with 17 bots works too, if you play on "terra" and "huge".

Many games aren't designed or optimized to use 2G out of the box, but some games can have their performance increased by changing an INI file or similar, depending on the engine. It forces the game to use more memory.

I don't think I noticed a difference in any of the games I play. BF2 is the one I've heard others bring up a lot in this context, but I don't play that. It can be helpful in some numerical math programs though.

UT2004 is one example of this. I remember that the load times dramatically fell (even when I had 1GB) when I increased the CacheSizeMegs settings in its ini file.

Try Sim City 4

I bet if Sim City 5 was still going to happen it would need like 4 GB minimum to run smoothly after a while. Basically all EA Games are ram hogs.
