game's screen resolution

Everytime i play a game the highest screen resolution i can go is 640x480. If i go higher the sides of the screen are pushed in and near the top and bottom of the screen stsrt to turn in some. Windows Xp home desktop is fine 800x600 at 75hz refresh rate. Does anybody why this is happening and how i can fix it.
On an older computer i have the games run fine at 800x600 and higher.

Epox 8kha+
athlon xp 1800
visiontek geforce 4 ti4200
512 ram.

you need to get a refresh rate fix. and force the refreshrate to 75. XP will default at 60

windows xp will put it back to 60 when i start a game?? and do you know where i can find this refresh rate fix.

thanks for your help i just downloadeed the nvidia refresh rate fix and it works wonders. Thank you for all your help.
