Games Industry says, "What recession?"

Our favorite time of the month again...

Per the NPD for January... Wii and DS are still kicking ass, the 360 actually saw an increase in the number of consoles sold over last year, and the PS3 sold a respectable amount (but a drop from last year) with the PSP close behind and the PS2 still selling.

Wii - 679.2K
Nintendo DS - 510.8K
Xbox 360 - 309.0K
PlayStation 3 - 203.2K
PSP - 172.3K
PlayStation 2 - 101.2K

On the software side of things, Wii titles (particularly Wii Fit) dominated the top three positions on the chart with Left4Dead showing that it too can be an 'evergreen title'.

1. Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii) - 777K
2. Wii Play (Nintendo, Wii) - 415K
3. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo, Wii) - 292K
4. Left 4 Dead (Valve/EA, Xbox 360) - 243K
5. Call of Duty: World at War (Treyarch/Activision, Xbox 360) - 235K
6. Skate 2 (EA Black Box/EA, Xbox 360) - 199K
7. Guitar Hero: World Tour (Neversoft/Activision, Wii) - 155K
8. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, NDS) - 135K
9. Mario Kart DS (Nintendo, NDS) - 132K
10. Lord of the Rings: Conquest (Pandemic/EA, Xbox 360) - 113K

All told, $1.33 billion in revenue for the month. Up from $1.18 billion in Jan 2008.

Nintendo prints money. Install base. Price drop. Wow, can't believe the PS2 is still selling! Wii play is still on the list! 360 dominates software again, guess it's because PS3 owners only use it as a Blu-ray player. The 360 is for hardcore gamers - not that softcore gamer crap the Wii has. SKU. Price point.

Yeah but wasn't there a shortage for a while (like Wii Fit)?

To me it's simple math, as expensive as consoles are doing the real life equivilent, while more fun, is also more expensive.

Example, Call of Duty: W@W - $65 after tax
Going to the shooting range 2x - ~$90 (after ammo, range time, targets, etc)

Mario Kart Wii - $55
Going hi-powered gokarting - $25/12 mins

Wii Fit - $95

Gym membership - $30/month
Personal trainer - $40/hr
Spandex outfit that emphasizes your butt - $25

See, simple math people!

Damn, Nintendo is still kicking ass! Doesnt everyone have a Wii or a DS already? Is there a place that has a total tally of Wiis and DSs? I bet they sold more Wiis and DSs than there are humans on this planet! 🙂 Damn, Sony is so................not.
