I would have to say the most engrossing and fun was Painkiller for me.

I sold Doom3 and FarCry...too hard and not really engaging like Painkiller.

My favorites this year would be FarCry, Half Life 2, and Burnout 3. All wonderful games.

I haven't played Painkiller myself. I think I'll check it out after I finish HL2.

 
Does it have to be a game that come out this year? The best game I played was Baldurs Gate 2.

take a note the demo in the link is a very outdate version, all the moves are tweaked, no (or not as many) infinities and bugs in the newest version(2.008 as of now)... other differences like regaining only 150% circuit after HEAT wears off (as opposed to 200% in the demo), charas dont turn blue but get a bluish aura instead.. the point of the demo is to demonstrate the general system and how gorgeous it looks. what it does not come with however is
- story mode and arcade mode
- 10 other charas
- 18 more stage backgrounds
- EXCELLENT voice acting on charas
- winning poses for each chara
TYPE MOON and watanabe seisakusho deserve some mad props for bringing out a game of this caliber, just pay for your copy! (or make your friends buy one for you as i did )
 
ASIDE from Halo 2 (because that is currently my favorite game), I would have to say that the game I had the most fun with aside from that was Burnout 3 on XBox. game has the fastest sense of speed in a racing game EVER. and i personally think it feels faster than those 'futuristic wipeout clone' games as well, even if the MPH doesnt say so. the game is just a masterpiece in every way, and i cant think of another game I have had more fun with than that one this year (aside from Halo 2, which I still am glued to).
 
I bought Call of Duty when it was on sale for $10 at EB, and it was excellent. HL2 will be my next purchase (in January, when I get a new vid card).
 
I'm going to deviate a great deal from the pack and choose MVP 2004. I've probably put over 200 hours into that game. I started off terrible, but closed strong in 2004 to keep my job as manager of the Red Sox. 2005 though, I'm ~135 games in, and it's not even close. I'm 33.5 games up on the Yanks, have a record of something like 105-30, my team ERA is in the mid 2 range, and Manny has already set a single season home run record (79, on pace for 99). So, after I finish this season, I'll bump the difficulty to MVP and do it all over again.
 
W40K: Dawn of War, Reminded me of the old Starcraft days sadly I had no one to play multiplayer with.
Call Of Duty, Best WWII Shooter EVAR
GTA : San Andreas, Rockstar went all out and it shows, wonderful game.
Far Cry, Beautiful, Decent AI, Challenging , Horrible Voice acting.
Doom 3, Big and Hairy, but too short and felt more like a tech-demo than a game.

Games I am looking forward to....
HL2 - More Gordon Freeman? Yes, Please!
MoH : Pacific Assault, Mix of Far Cry graphics and CoD gameplay, how can you go wrong.

Most of my game time this year went into a game released in Late 2003. Project Gotham Racing 2, by far, one of my favorite games ever.

Farcry was decent, I got pissed when my HD got corrupted and I lost my saved game.
Doom3 was decent, but it got tedious.
 
Halo 2.

Fable would be a long leader if i didnt beat it in 10 hours. (yeah i know i can take other paths and up it to a whopping 25, im just glad i rented it and didnt blow $50 on it)
