Make a poll....

I prefer headphones because then I don't disturb anyone else and can turn it up as loud as I want.

For gaming, I like headphones because I've PoS speakers. If I want to hear subtle ambient sounds while just exploring/camping/desperately seeking ammo-and-health, I have to really crank up the volume. Then BOOM, a guy unleashes hell with a SMG or grenade and I'm knocked out of my senses.

Headphones are usually better for reproducing ambient sounds at reasonable volume levels. Or maybe I live in a noisy environment.

I've been using 2.0 headphones for the longest time.

Much better than speakers. I can hear the mofos walking around in CS and plan accordling.

Also, the neighbors don't feakout from all the gunfire and screams of horror.

I use a set of Logitech Z5500's. I've never tried surrond headphones though. But, I can't imagine them being as satisfying as the bass I get from explosions with the Z5500's.

Whenever I use headphones, I can always hear stuff I missed using speakers...

Maybe it is just my ultra crappy speakers...

Headphones will always produce more resolution and detail (and usually imaging) than speakers, which is very important in gaming. However, you should stay away from the so-called "5.1" headphones - they usually sound like crap and a decent stereo headphone will usually give you the same amount of soundstage and imaging, better sound quality, for cheaper.

Both!! I have a the Altec Lansing ADA995 and the Medusa 5.1 headset. Both of them have excellent audio quality. Only complaint is the ADA995s are loud at only 40% volume. I mainly use the speakers but use my headset for LAN parties, Skype, or when it starts getting late.

I use to be a speaker only man before getting married. Now I'm a headphone only man. It works two ways. One, I get clearer louder sound without bothering anyone else. Two, I can pretend I can't hear my wife when I'm wearing them.

Sennheiser 580's on Amazon (closeout) will destroy any speaker system you buy at your local store.

True, some headphones that advertise themselves as "5.1 headphones" really aren't. But the Zalmans aren't "so-called 5.1 headphones"... they actually have 6 speakers that provide the surround sound. Sounds great in games - for example, I can tell when someone's firing behind me in Prey.

5.1 headphone's have lower impedance compared to something like A-900's, DT-880's, or HD-555's/595's. I love my HD-555's, and they blow away everything for the price that I paid for them.
